I just finished Martian Chronicles (read it in one day, yeah i know, i was bored) and am starting on the Brethren. Anyone read either, wanna comment?

I read The Martian Chronicles a few times in the course of a year back when I was 18 or so and was absolutely blown away by it. I used to quote it all the time. Hmm, maybe I should go read it again...

my friend has read it and loves it, I don't get the big deal, i enjoyed it a lot but there were a lot of parts that confused me. Like the whole third expedition.

I've read The Martian Chronicles about 5 times, perhaps more. Absolutely classic writing, in my opinion. In regards to the third expedition, what didn't you understand?

So in my 30's I'm filling in gaps in my reading, while I mostly read scifi in my youth, there were still selected works that I missed, The Martian Chronicles being one of them (though reading through it, I recognized some of the vignettes likely from short story collections).

Anyways, I really enjoyed what I read, but a quick look on wiki shows the book has been subjected to some Lucas-ing over the years, with vignettes being dropped and added and 30 years being added to the dates to make them fit better (which I find silly IMHO).

Can anyone recommend a version that's not too hard to find that's the most complete, maybe with commentary/annotation?

The Martians don't want humans taking over the planet, so they build a fake American town and use psychic powers to impersonate the dead relatives of the astronauts. Then, when the astronauts feel secure, the Martians kill them. One of the best horror stories ever.

Keep in mind, the book is really a short story collection that loosely tells the history of human colonization of Mars.
