I thought about The Coffee Table, as it's brilliant. But I just don't think it's a movie I'll want to watch very often.

Picked up Little Darlings and thought about the From Hong Kong set but passed on that one.

Had the Magical Crystal sell out in my cart.

Got my Undeclared War and got the hell out of there . Hell Comes to Frogtown was also in today’s drop and sold out in less than 2-3 min

I got Little Darlings too. Just the standard edition, an extra $10 for the slip was too big an ask for me. I considered That Guy Dick Miller, but price was too steep for a documentary IMO.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Oh!

Now I'm seeing that some of the discs in the "special OOP sale!" are movies that are still in stock, just with the coveted slipcovers. If you see a title in the OOP sale that you're ok with a non-slip version of, you can wait till the Black Friday sale and get it at a better price. There's still over 700 copies of Little Darlings non-slip for sale, that one will definitely be available on BF, I kinda chose poorly there. Same with That Guy Dick Miller, although there's less than 200 copies of the standard edition left, I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on the inventory level there before November.

Picked up Howling 2, just need to make 1 more purchase tomorrow to hit the "free" 1500 points.

Spent points early in the event before I knew about the Black Cat so I will probably have to end up getting that later though.

Will need to pick up that Pink Line Release at some point.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Man, today was horrible. Missed on one thing after another, each selling out as I was trying to checkout. Hundreds Of Beavers, Keanu and Co and then again with Bullets Over Summer.

Eventually I just bought a $30 shirt to get my $15 of points. I way overpaid during this “sale”.

sleepyhead55 09-02-25 12:18 PM

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Bullets over summer still had a ton of standard edition copies.

I only picked up Undeclared War and the Grave since I always missed picking them up in previous sales. The only other title I really wanted was my heart is that eternal rose but I can wait on that one and import it later from radiance

This is something I’ve found rather confusing about this sale, especially the “OOP” titles that were genuinely unavailable on the site in either form suddenly being on the sale with a modest amount of slip version but hundreds of copies of the standards. It keeps bringing me back to questioning how slack their inventory control is that this many now supposedly OOP titles just happen to have hundreds of copies gathering dust in the corner of their old warehouse. Fishy.

Also, on some of these titles is there a chance that expired licences or whatever might mean that they can’t be put back into ‘regular’ stock and then be truly discounted at, say, Black Friday? I certainly wouldn’t put it past them to remove them after this event and sit on them until a future “OOP” sale so they can once again charge full price for them. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I gotta wonder.

Same here. I’m a nighthawk so a late-riser by nature, so I’m checking these sales a few minutes after waking up and for the most part I grabbed titles I missed when they were in print, plus some that I already have in standards – all cross-checked against Amazon Canada’s marketplace pricing because many will probably end up there if I don’t need to keep them – but there’s that pressure to blow through the listings so quickly as the stock quantities dwindle that sometimes I’m thinking, “I didn’t really need that one.”

Also, I can confirm that the 1500 points deal is a one-time thing. I placed five+ orders on the first two days, all in fairly quick succession so nothing stayed in my cart too long and disappeared. That triggered the bonus points. I was curious if five more orders might get me an additional 1500 points, but no luck. Woulda been nice, considering these prices.

I did boost my points from a little over 5000 to over 8000 (including the bonus) and didn’t use any on these purchases. Now I’m hovering over BLACK DRAGON, DRUG-A-RAMA PARTY, and VICE ACADEMY. None seem likely to sell out before a sale but I’ve told myself that before, including the first time VICE ACADEMY was available (and all three wouldn’t likely be in a sale until spring or summer). Probably sounds weird but I prefer to use my points on the ‘real’ sales so I get discounts on top of (preferably steep) discounts, so I’ll probably waffle on these three throughout the day, plus some others new-ish releases I’ve been keeping an eye on.

Well, I'm starting to think the "Out of Print" sale was really more of a "We found some slipcovers" sale, which makes a LOT more sense from an inventory tracking standpoint if you look at it. Certainly with one of the titles I mentioned, Little Darlings.

They do this because there’s a clear market for this stuff and capitalize on it. I’m not in the habit of paying an extra $5 for a piece of cardboard but others will.

I’ve learned to sit out these things unless there’s something I really want . The funny thing is if you wait it out , eventually most (not all) of their titles will be on sale for greater than 50% off.

And that's why I finally decided to smarten up today and actually buy some titles that were ON SALE. I got, all with slips:

Corpse Mania
The Snowtown Murders
In-Between Girl

The last one was only $8.75, so why not, right?

The 75% sale this time was mostly newer indie stuff that I’m unfamiliar with, but at less than ten bucks each I’m willing to take a chance on those, so I likewise got IN-BETWEEN GIRL, plus KEEP
AN EYE OUT, NO RESISTANCE and TAKE ME SOMEWHERE NICE.

In some tiny way, those offset the “OOP” purchases I made, which I’m not entirely proud of.

I’d say probably 97% of the VS product I’ve bought (can’t really call it a collection as a lot of it doesn’t get added to my permanent library), came from the 50% sales, and now from the 60% and 75% sales. Those latter two come in handy as they’re MSRP and ‘regular’ pricing seems to have crept up over the last couple of years.

I added Take Me Somewhere Nice based on your post. Keep an Eye Out almost made the cart too.

I'm obviously most interested in In-Between Girl, working for an Asian-American film festival that thrives on these "coming of age" films. I went back into our history and see we never showed it, although it was a 2019 release, meaning it could have been caught up in Covid when we did our festival virtually. Still, after I see it I'm gonna chat with our program director (assuming it's any good of course) and see if it was submitted and rejected. I don't always agree with his decisions but it makes for good conversation. Like, he didn't want to show Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, a movie I absolutely adored.

That has been in my “to watch” pile for quite some time, going to bump it closer to the top.

I'm probably about the same. I've had people ask me why don't I just subscribe, and while I do spend a good $4-500 a year on VS titles, that's still a lot less than the subscription price and I only get titles I'm interested in. I know you can flip titles you don't want usually for a profit to offset subscription costs, but I'm far too lazy to do that.

Kumiko is very much a "downward spiral" movie, if that's your jam; a woman who has made bad decisions in life makes increasingly worse ones. If you like the work of the Safdies (especially Uncut Gems and Good Time) and Sean Baker, it'll be right up your alley.

That’s basically my story. I spend a fair bit more, but most of that is on stuff that has aged into the sale categories. It’s a mix of ‘wants’ and select blind buys of stuff I’ve probably heard of for years, at least. I’m not fond of the subscription idea because, as much as I buy from VS in the long run, there’s a lot of stuff I wouldn’t bother with even at 50% off. Maybe at 60-75% on a whim but then the subscription definitely wouldn’t make sense.

Regarding flipping, VS stuff does carry appreciable resale value up here for whatever reason, as do a lot of the ‘boutique’ oddities that I buy, which makes it easier for me to try out less familiar titles when they’re discounted cheap enough. Admittedly, though, a used item might sell in a month or it might sell years from now, so the discs do take up space here in the meantime, which is a consideration, too. I’ve had my Amazon seller account for ages, so at this point there's just enough ‘stock’ to be a very modest side hustle that offsets the monthly expenses a wee bit.

Sale returns on Thursday at noon. I bought a LOT of movies at 50% off at the "Syntober" sale and again at Black Friday, I'd say at least a dozen or so. Let's see how many of those show up in the special $13 sale over the next week.

Day 1:

Completely forgot, hope I didn't miss anything in an early sell out.

Nearly accidentally bought Dog Tags and Black Room again but had the presence e of mind to check my emails first.

Did get 5 Dead on The Crimson Canvas, The Sales Girl, Super Soul Brother & VS Film Scanner Shirt

Also as an update they are down to only 51 bars of Orgy Butter

Not going to do the VS bonus points punch card?

nope. I don’t order a lot from them and would find it difficult spending $30 a day.

I came close to breaking the dam several times today (cuz once it bursts, all bets are off and before you know it a big-ass box is coming from VS) on titles like Don't Go In the Woods, Horror High, and especially The Possession of Joel Delaney, but I held firm. Joel is still well over 2000 copies, that one is gonna show up in future sales for sure.

I do recommend Dog Tags and Black Room for anyone considering them though. Two very enjoyable VS blind buys for me last year.
