Passed on today.

Considered A Man Called Hero for a bit, but the trailer turned me off. Looked kinda cheesy, I think I'm better off without it.

Very much trying to avoid the draw of packaging and so far I have only picked up Daily Deals items...
Santet 1 and 2 for $14 is just easier to justify to myself, and my wife, then Street Trash for $30 (when I already have the Synapse version) and The Terrornauts for $30 (which looks like trash, but fabulous trash!), no matter how visually tempting they may be...

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Just a few days ago I moved a small stack of old one-off, mostly barebones DVDs and Blus from my bins to my coffee table to plow through them, and the Olive edition of Sidney Lumet's CHILD'S PLAY was among them. Got that for around $3.95 because of the price rather than knowing anything about it. It never seemed like something I'd keep from what I've read about it, but obviously the folks at Cinematographé thought more highly of it.

I was grumbling about the price of the Home Grown Horrors sets earlier, and here's Vol. 1 (standard) at $20 today. Still kinda on the fence.

I picked up the SANTET set as well. Even though Indonesian horror from that era can be an acquired taste, it's usually reliably lo-fi and goofy. The other two are definitely on my radar (especially to upgrade TERRORNAUTS from the UK DVD), but I'm confident they'll last a while.

LOL I got the same disc at Hamiltonbook for I think like 6.95. Still haven’t watched it. I’m on the fence on Dangerous Game but not sure about rewatchability.

Mausoleum and Bio Zombie, and Calvaire are the only others I may buy, but I haven’t seen any of them.

I have seen the Sadness. Its an aquired taste and I’ll leave it at that. Also they finally shipped my bf orders

Child's Play somewhat interests me but more just as a curiosity as a Lumet fan. It's not something I feel the need to order right now, which is the same that can be said for today's daily deals.

That's where I got mine as well. Took them ages to sell out of it, so . . .

I've recommended BIO ZOMBIE a few times around this forum and haven't received any hate mail yet, to my knowledge. :) To me, it's quintessential Hong Konger cinema in many ways — as in, tailored to local sensibilities — and it's set in a location that always reminds me of a favourite haunt here in Toronto. Keeping in mind, of course, that it's a horror-comedy, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Isn't the Street Trash they're selling a 2024 remake? Or did Synapse release that version too?

I'm rolling the dice on Bio Zombie. True, horror-comedy is not my favorite sub-genre but I got a feeling about this one. Still considering Mausoleum, but I might hold off. It looks like there's a Hong Kong movie every day in this sale, and I'm thinking tomorrow's will be An Eye For an Eye, which is on my short list.

The audio dubb on Biozombie is fantastic, it is unfortunately not included on the VS release though.

I guess VS got a lot of flack for that as they have a message about it on their site:

Please note: our edition of Bio Zombie is presented with its original Cantonese language track as well as its official Mandarin dub. While we are aware than an English dub was created by a former US distributor, it was not sanctioned, supervised, or approved by the filmmakers and presents a highly inaccurate translation and poor mix.

I was hoping that one would turn up this week. It's one of the holdovers on my list, mainly to replace the barebones Olive version. Almost bit in a previous sale but figured it would be wise to wait. I'm sure it'll be even cheaper down the road based on those quantities, but those are decent prices.

Also, GREAT price on the LOST PICTURE SHOW box at $48 (previous sale price was $60, which was good, too), especially based on the sheer amount of content in it. And yes, it's all cheap, weird, no-budget shit, but kudos to them for finding a way to load it all into one set rather than chiseling away at us for years with unwarranted individual releases. I think doing 10,000 copies of that one was a bit optimistic right from the start.

Also, RED MOB is kinda fun for a just post-fall-of-communism era Russian action picture, with a number of impressive large-scale action sequences. Saw that on VHS back in 1992 and missed the earlier slip edition before it sold out. The new slip is looks a bit more appropriate anyway. :) WONDER WOMEN is a lot of fun, too, btw, if you dig some of the wild Philippines-shot action pictures of that era.

Paff 01-07-25 11:42 AM

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

I actually got Red Mob a while ago in a brick and mortar store, used, then got the reprint slip last year. It's in my unwatched pile though, still.
Wonder Women is indeed fun, it's got Asian-American icon Nancy Kwan, Ross "Sidehackers" Hagen (for you MST3Kers), and WAY more nudity than you'd expect in a PG-rated movie. And most importantly, that wocka-ja-wocka bumper music that always accompanies the Vinegar Syndrome logo comes from the opening of WW!
ETA: Wonder Women was also the movie that introduced me to the rabbit hole of Vinegar Syndrome slipcovers. I had purposely avoided getting slips, getting the standard editions to save the 4 bucks or so on a title. But even though I ordered the standard edition of WW, they sent me a slip edition by mistake, and once I saw a VS slip in person, I immediately saw why they're so coveted.

I rounded out my order today with the "Lost Picture Show" box ( just too cheap to pass up ) & "Wonder Women" ( which I dig ).

Paff 01-07-25 08:30 PM

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

I considered that Lost Picture Show box, but with over 1000 copies left I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on it. I got a feeling like Camille Keaton in Italy, Six String Samurai, Made in Hong Kong, and Televised Terror, we're gonna see that in sales quite a bit for another year or so, I can go for it then.

Instead I got :
The Films of Enrique Gomez Vadillo
Blood-O-Rama Triple Frightmare
Terror VSMC slipcover (one of my first, and favorite VS releases, now I have the slipcover for it)

Re: Vinegar Syndrome - Subscriber Week Sale

Finally tally (gulp) in chronological order:

RIDDLE OF FIRE
DR. HICHCOCK
TED BUNDY
TORTURED SOUL TRILOGY
GIVE ME PITY
ATTACK OF THE BEAST CREATURES
SQUARING THE CIRCLE (never realized this is technically a design doc, which made it more appealing)
SANTET 1/2
KING ON SCREEN
FORBIDDEN LOVE
AMAZON JAIL (already own)
HOUSE OF THE DEAD
SEXMISSION
LIFELINE
SISTER SISTER
EXPECT NO MERCY
THE RIPPER
HITCHER IN THE DARK
A GUN FOR JENNIFER
A MAN CALLED HERO
HOME GROWN HORRORS 1 (I caved  )
MAIL ORDER MURDER (I’ve seen a couple of the W.A.V.E. “Movies” – hooo, boy – but this doc looked like a better and better-made overview of the company, and it was cheap)
THEY CALL ME MACHO WOMAN
THE BLACK ROOM
RABID GRANNIES
RED MOB (new slip)
THE FILMS OF ENRIQUE VADILLO
DR. TERROR’S HOUSE OF HORRORS

Total: I don’t wanna know.

Boldface titles are the ones I bought to add to my ‘permanent collection’, so to speak. The rest are all likely to be resold after watching unless they really surprise me.

Noticed this addition just now. Gotta admit, I went for the slip option on most of the titles above. My own VS history is a mix of ‘with’ and ‘without’ slips, and sometimes – especially in recent years – they can be a bit amateurish, but there are still a number of designers who nail the right vibe and knock it out of the park (WONDER WOMEN being a good example). On stuff I’ll likely resell, I figure why not get the add-on since the next guy who takes it from me might make his decision based on that.

Another thing I find interesting about the slips is their tendency to catch passersby offguard at the VS store here. Almost every time I’m down there, people walk by, glance in the window, stop and do a double-take, look puzzled, then come in to ask the guy “What are these?” or something to that effect. Because so many slips are collages of imagery or borderline abstract interpretations of the films, when they’re displayed together in massive quantities they can seem, from a distance, like books or indie graphic novels or stationery products, or other things that aren’t movies. And since the store’s in kind of a boutique-y shopping district, it tends to catch the uninitiated by surprise that physical media still exists (assuming they even know what it is! )

Got out the calculator this morning...I ended up spending 175 bucks this week. I guess it makes up for not really doing much on Black Friday.

Between the Subscrbers Week Sale, Partners Month Sale, and the VS has 14 titles that they need to send me. I am still not sure why they sent my copy of Cannibal: The Musical and not the rest of my BF items, but as long as I eventually get them I am fine and I am not hurting for things to watch right now.

I was more thinking from a statistical point of view; Todd bought a lot of titles, I bought quite a few too, there were only a handful on sale any given day, you'd think there'd be at least some overlap (although it's mostly coincidence. I was seriously considering Mausoleum and Lost Picture Show, which would have given us at least one or two titles in common)

Now is everyone all ready for the Valentine's Day sale they usually do?

You’re right. I did cover a lot of bases. I guess it shows too how polarizing “bad” films can be. I do own the Blood o Rama triple feature already though.
