Barnes & Noble: 50% Off Criterion titles from 10/29/21 through 11/29/21

That sure snuck up quickly!

There are murmurs that Criterion's first wave of UHD releases will not be included in the sale, but I guess we'll find out for sure tomorrow.

What time does the sale usually pop up on the B&N website?

Rolling out slowly right now, but not unusual for it to be 1:30-2 am ET before most are switched adn there's always soem items that get left behind until morning .

So far the 4K appear to be discounting at least tonight

It took some fighting, but I was able to get in my preorders for the 4 UHD titles. Iím sure Iíll snag some more (High Sierra at the very least) later.

I'm so broke I'm going to try to wait to see if Target does another sale and what is going to be on sale on BF.
If Target does another buy-2-get-1-free sale in November and Amazon should copy the sale.
While the selection and layout was crap at Amazon. I did pick up 6 Criterions that I needed.
Yeah, I'm a cheap ass movie watcher sometimes.

Hoping to pick up The Incredible Shrinking Man, La Strada, Onibaba and Ashes and Diamonds are at the top of my list.

This sale did sort of sneak up on me. I will pick up the Melvin Van Peebles box set.

Hmmm... This may be the first B&N sale I've sat out in years. I'm pretty much caught up on releases. I will get the 4Ks, but I might as well just wait until February and get them from the flash sale for the points.

edit: immediately goes and places order.

These sales sure aren't what they used to be, but still happy to get the four new UHD titles at half off. Just glad I'm not a poor college student trying to afford these now.

Re: Barnes & Noble: 50% Off Criterion titles from 10/29/21 through 11/29/21

Well Criterion's official email about the sale just came out and specifically mentioned the UHDs as being 50% off. Guess that puts all that misinformation to rest.

so what's with this rush to score these UHDs at 50% off ? These sales occur all the time and if not this, the next one round the corner will feature these titles in the sale. I mean, the sense of desperation that's conveyed to grab these is mind boggling

You know some people just have to have things Day 1 (or 4-5 days early) otherwise they've been cheated somehow. Delayed shipping by 2-3 days needs an emergency declaration and reparation. Heaven forbid an item show up a whole week after release date b/c everyone knows the disc have a timed self destruct mechanism built it like the opening the MI.

I think it's less the UHD were available this sale specifically, but the idea that maybe they would be permanently excluded and that might portend other items following eventually, but quite a lot of gotta be first in line
for bragging rights. Being 1st in line for the 1st Criterion UHD Release at least is something unique. The thing wiht most Criterion is that 50% is about the best price most people will see so it's not like other line where if you wait
longer eventually things will drop 65-70-75% off

Despite showing the 50% pricing for the UHD pre-orders coming in November and allowing them to be added to your shopping cart, the B&N site will not allow you to purchase them. An error message comes up saying that Uncut Gems, Citizen Kane and Mulholland Dr are out of stock online. Hopefully, that glitch gets cleared up soon.

What point do you get that message -- I just added and went to the last checkout screen without an issue (didn't click to final purchase button though)

Are you in US?

I haven't read too many reports of being OOS, but many reports of items locking up and not being able to check out smoothly -- even for the BN website, more technical problems than usual

For these in particular, itís been a question of whether BN would include them in the sale. There were reports of them not being included, and we know sometime BN has included things erroneously early on in sales and corrected them later.

I really donít care if I get them day one, but I do want to get them closer to release so I can watch them sooner rather than waiting till a February or July sale, which still has no guarantees that theyíd be included.

A poster on blu-ray.com said that someone from B&N (customer support? a store employee? I forget) told him that the UHD titles would be excluded, at Criterion's request. They were showing up at 50% when the sale first(-ish) went live, so I wanted to get in while the gettin' was good, in case it was one of those happy accidents like coupon codes being usable in the early hours of a sale but not afterwards.

I'm in the US. It happens on the final checkout screen after hitting the submit order button. The button goes grey, and then it takes about 3-5 minutes for the screen to finally show an error message that any or all of those 3 mentioned 4k UHD titles are out of stock, and to please remove them from my cart. It's very odd.

EDIT: After separating out the non pre-orders from the 4K UHD pre-orders, it finally let me submit an order for the 4K titles as their own order.

Yeah, this was one factor, even if that rumor wasn't true. There's always changes after the first few hours.
Also, and I know this is a crazy thought around here, maybe, just maybe, some folks are also excited about getting copies of these films so they can watch them.
I know, I know. Must just be 'desperation'...

Actually watch the movies that we buy? The hell you say! I thought we were simply collectors around here.

Ah, those days of the 30% off coupons and the constant war with store managers during these sales - some treating you like you were robbers and some going out of their way into overriding the system to make the coupons acceptable. Built quite the collection with this hit or miss strategy. Fpr some reason, flashed back to it today

Picked up a few titles in-store today:

Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Onibaba (1964)
The Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs
Throw Down (2004)

Wanted to pickup a copy of the Melvin Van Peebles Collection but the store I visited had them all in spider wraps.

I'll be after a copy in the next coming weeks.

I got Love and Basketball and the Once Upon a Time in China box set. That's all I wanted.

Criterion is not a label I buy from too often. Most of the titles are way too niche for me.

Picked up Citizen Kane and Mulholland Drive. Thought about Uncut Gems and Menace II Society, but I'm not sure those justify an 4K upgrade.

Ordered Hoop Dreams, Melvin Van Peebles collection and pre-ordered Citizen Kane. Haven't done this sale in years, but looking forward to these.
