Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I just logged on this site for the first time in a few years. I definitely slowed down a lot due to digital. This past year there haven't been a ton of sales and with young kids, I just haven't had the time to watch as many movies as I would like. Other than Black Friday sales, the last time I bought a lot was in the beginning of 2020 when Best Buy had a lot of 4k Disney/Marvel Steelbooks on sale.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I check the site most every day, but rarely see any deals worth pursuing. There aren't a lot of titles I'm interested in buying, as I've upgraded most of my DVD collection to blu-ray. Now the new thing is 4K, but for me, that upgrade isn't worth the added cost. Maybe it's because I'm older and have crummy eyesight, but I don't see much of a difference. That and the fact that the prices for 4K are pretty ridiculous (I mean, come on, $30 for Last Action Hero?).

My threshold was $10 for blu-ray, now it's $11-12 for 4K. Just not much out there for that price (yes, I'm cheap. But I'm also patient and don't need the latest when it comes out). Maybe once the studios stop gouging their customers, things will improve.

Oh, and I'm also one of those dinosaurs who want to own physical media. I don't trust the studios to not try to screw their customers (I'm looking at you Apple).

Just my two cents.

I generally play downloaded films through my Oppo. There is a reason it has NEVER been connected to the net & never will be!

A decent source of deals is using the Blu-ray/4K tag in the Hot Deals section of SlickDeals. It's probably the easiest, most convenient source of finding Blu-ray/UHD deals these days.

I'm not sure this link will work for everyone.

I'm buying more now than ever, though that will trail off. I discovered boutique labels like Kino, Indicator, Eureka & Warner Archive, and I discovered a taste for film noir. A combination deadly to the wallet.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

Yea, i have like read of new stock of media at places but due to med reasons and pandemic i see no rush to get any. most is on dvd since not many movies have converted to blu ray for any reason. 4k is the new blu ray so it gonna sit long time till they get cheaper any. i use to snag up any dvd worth a grab but now it like i am more selective as to who in movie and xtras. have many not watchd since see most online now days that can try get the media later idk. so sales can happen but traffic aint gonna bite unless the price is right lol.

I think there's only so much the human eye can see. I've presently got 50 4k titles, and have really only been "wowed" a handful of times. And generally it's due to the vibrant color, not the higher resolution. Some audio tracks are improved too, but man oh man, 4k, so far, has a dicey track record. Definitely research before you buy. I refuse to pre-order a 4k movie.

The least "demanding" (from a technical standpoint) 4k disc I own has got to be Step Brothers. And they screwed THAT up! All the skin tones are orange in it.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I find myself grabbing an occasional movie I never upgraded to BD. So going from DVD -> 4K. I feel less guilty about the double dip in this scenario despite the lack of deals.

Plus my kids are teens now so we're venturing into more adult fare. While I do grab an occasional DVD off the shelf to watch with them, picking up the 4k...well, seems less guilty again.

Or maybe I'm just rationalizing my buying.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I’m posting just to post something. I’ve bought more media than ever this year and am anxiously awaiting both the vinegar syndrome and Severin sales, but eventually they will run out of titles I have interest in as well because I have a lot already. Those are my 2 fav boutique labels followed by scream, arrow, and synapse

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I've never even seen 4k demo'd at a shop or a friend's home; so don't plan to go there. I've already replaced a ton of VHS->DVD->Blu (some with multiple editions) & have been worse with music. The corps don't need any more of my money! They've already received over $50k.

Agree on the DVD to 4K. Most Blu-ray Discs are still good enough for hi def viewing.

Watching porn in 4k with your teens sounds a little weird.

Some 4k stuff looks almost 3D to me, especially new heavily CG constructed movies. For older analog titles, the difference isn't as profound or necessary.

Really? My favorite 4k titles BY FAR are older movies shot and finished on film. Most modern cgi stuff is upscaled from a 2k DI.

That said, I typically limit my 4k purchases to new titles, old titles I've never owned, or dvd upgrades. I can probably count on one hand the number blu-rays I've upgraded. That might say more about the kinds of titles getting released in 4k though. Like I said, I prefer the older stuff.

I guess it depends, Transformers: The Last Knight (don't judge) looks ridiculously sharp. It's like a bunch of razor blades thrown at your eyes. Deadpool looks great as well. I don't have a ton of 4k, but those that I have tend to be newer releases. I got The Ten Commandments to review and it looks great, too. I guess it depends on what a person wants out of 4k. The progression of home formats has primarily been increased sharpness of picture, so that's what geeks me out about good modern 4k.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

Not sure if i ever gonna go 4k if i do ok with dvd and any else i watch is decent. only got blu ray any if combo with dvd by chance. but seeing videos on youtube not many dvd have a blu ray release any so i just happy i can still get good stuff on dvd and upgrade to blu ray later any. but to get 4k is an idk factor cause i read 4k got no extra any so far and traffic just get 4k cause quality i guess better then blu ray any. but may not get 4k really if got no 4k tv any lol. i guess like games, blu ray and 4k is like a remastered copy of old movies any. or am i wrong?

It will be hard to get anything but a 4K tv within a couple years. The market is quickly becoming 4K even at the entry level.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

It is like when blu ray came out, i was no rush to get it at time so kept getting dvd any. 4k is like the new blu ray cause not all movies are on 4k yet. so can enjoy dvd and blu ray for now. and some or many think gotta get upgrades so spend more for new instead of just enjoying what u got already. the whole thing taking stuff for granted seems to happen alot for some or many now days.

I hear you. I spent a lot of money on DVDs that I barely used which ended up on Blu-ray or UHD.
