That definitely plays a part. Back when all this started, I had dozens and dozens of movies I wanted to own. After 25 years of DVD and almost 15 of BD, there is virtually nothing left that hasn't been put out in a decent edition. And with Hollywood more or less shutting down for the past year, it's not like there's a plethora of new releases.

Yeah, I’m about done too. I’ve even found myself letting go of stuff that I got into the hobby for (like Star Trek- it’s on all kinds of streaming ).

So the days when I find a new title I want are few and far between. I’m not even upgrading that many DVDs to Blu or 4K since a lot of them still look good.

I came in here to see how things were like. Bought my first discs in a long time to try to improve/complete my Kurosawa collection. Looking forward to another Criterion sale. But I still remember the days of Speedy posting deals from multiple places, including Circuit City.

I primarily buy boutique stuff these days, and I get my deals at the Salvation Army and the flea market.
I'll be back to the pawn shops once Covid is no longer a "thing". Assuming they still sell dvd/blu-ray. Most pawn shops within 100 miles of me dropped cd's a few years ago.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

I recent went to a thrift place i used to go to alot and since pandemic i dont go as much but by chance scored some good sealed dvd for 2 bucks ea. even a disney sealed not pretagged for 2 lol. so it a god sign if not pretagged so cheap and seaeld not gotta check cds any if scratched or ruined any. so nice to get sealed dvd if any i real want for extras at time. not sure if ever get 4k since most dvd or blu ray got extras most of the time. saw some i already had so left at place for anyone else to add to collection or by chance resell that i guess some or many do now say. not a huge amount of media since they had some empty basket or almost empty so guess they get hit up by collectors or resellers anytime now days. just nice to score some good stuff by chance.

The only retail store I enjoy shopping at for physical media anymore is 2nd & Charles. Pricing is a little erratic but they often carry used DVDs/BDs that aren't just priced off the ludicrous used Amazon prices.

Pre-Covid, the 1/2 price books clearance racks usually had a couple gems in them; especially titles issued before upc's; as they totally priced based on Amazon. And no UPC, no listing on Amazon; or at best really hard to find search results.

I have a really good Salvation Army two doors down from where I work. So I stop by every week. They generally have lots of DVD's, CD's, and books. New stock all the time. Big store, and I certainly have more people around me where I work. Covid always worries me. I'm eligible for a vaccination, but it's been tough to get an available appointment.

Both, but I still lurk and pass through. The last year wasn't great for my wallet, but I was happy to see the recent Kino, Criterion, WB Archive and Grindhouse Video sales. I'm seeing more DVDs and Blu-rays pass through my local thrift store when I can get over there. In person shopping for discs is running out of locations - the local retailers give less and less space to the product. But I'm still looking online when I can't get them in person, so I'll keep passing through here.

I hear that. After days of looking I stumbled on to a shot by asking my regular pharmacy. They were out, but told me the pharmacy next door had a session for Friday 4/2. I got mine then. Had 2 significant (& delayed) side effects since. Hope I'm done with that.

I'm still working my way through my last Kino & Hamilton sale orders, & both were the sale before the current/most recent ones!

This is pretty close to my story. While there are still some things on my wish list it has shrunk slowly and steadily over the years to where anything still on it simply hasn't been released or at least not in a version worthy of paying for. Combine that with the fact that there are only a handful of new releases that come out each year that I consider worth buying and my purchases are way down, such that the typical sales aren't much of an incentive any more. Of course I still shop around for the least expensive sources when I do buy, but probably the Criterion sales are the only ones that still influence when I buy.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

Last went to thrift got a nice decent hand full mixed all sealed by chance. saw a criterion movie cause read teh label saying it, not sure what the big ting of that label or category is but i by chance came across them anytime. big stores are slow to clear media from places but send to i guess places that resend to cheaper stores to reduce price and thrift places anytime. so if can score a movie i really care to get for any reason i snag it but guess online places got backstock but if no sale the stock sit till they get orders for any so not gotta keep making media for sales any. so ever a sale it cause they got stockpile of it and try get rid of it some how. that is my guess.

This is true of the DVD phenomenon of the early-mid 2000s where a lot of back catalogue titles were being released, people bought what they wanted and then sales steadily dipped. This would have been the market trend regardless of whether Blu-ray and streaming existed or not. It was really quite predictable that you would reach market saturation then would have to rely on new release titles, leveling off the sales growth. Of course studio executives look at their sales graphs and panic because any decrease is considered a cause for panic.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

Until five, six years ago I used to be here almost every day. But I'll be honest and note that nowadays I mostly check out deals at bluray.com. The deal discussions there are engaging and the listings of deals easy and attractive to scan; a nice, functional design. Having said that, I'm buying far fewer blus & DVDs these days. In this past Covid year it's probably no more than a quarter of what I was buying in pre-Covid years. There are not only fewer good deals online (bye bye used disks at Family Video ) but this last year saw no real availability at yard sales and other sources of cheap disks. Being in a risk group, I'm not keen on rooting through stuff in-store, like at Dollar Tree or Half Price. On top of that, I'm much more choosy about what I'll spend money on, given my income. It's got to be something really special before I'll spend more than $2-3 on it. Also, I'm streaming more with our Roku, still getting Netflix DVDs, and taking out lots of hard-to-find TV series through the local library. But I still keep my eye peeled for that perfect deal on something I really want. Not ready to give up yet.

These days are great for media, especially DVD, if you visit used shops and second-hand places. Coming across fabulous stuff that would have been very pricey just five years ago. It's clear some segment of collectors are beginning to dump their DVD/BD collections.

I'm buying a lot less these days, so haven't been on this site for a while. But I really should keep tabs on things here more often... I'll still jump at good deals, but admittedly I do more than half of my annual movie purchases around the holidays...

So it is disappointing because the “other” sites boards are always very active, yet even though they’ve been down for a week with server issues there still isn’t much activity within our own beloved boards since them going down

I think it is because most posters here don't feel the need to post every inane though in their head and start arguments over the stupidest things. Yes, we have a bit of that here, but wading through pages of nonsensical arguments to find pertinent information to a topic happens here far less.

Online anyway it's the same amount of deals. Also I have a gigantic backlog of stuff I have to watch so I'm trying to cut back on spending.

On the other site's deals board, the majority of the conversation is driven by a small handful of very active posters. Even Blu-ray.com's volume of conversation has been on the wane the past few years. It's nowhere as active as it was around 2015. A segment moved on to digital copies and never really came back.

Re: Are Are There Less of Us These Days, Or Less Deals?

For me, a lot less deals these days. And I have so many movies , I not going to spend $ on a half ass sale.
Besides Target B2G1F deals and sometimes Hamilton books. I do not buy disc from many other stores.
