Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% Off MSRP Sale November 2 through December 3, 2018

Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% Off MSRP Sale November 2 through December 3, 2018

Posted by a BN employee early this morning.

I called my store and they hadn't received any information yet so for now consider this preliminary information and I'll get the mods to change the title if needed. The dates for the June sale changed 3 times in the last week, but generally this fits pretty well compared to the last 2-3 sales

I would say usual rule, but with this sale that means very little.

I don't expect coupons to be accepted.
It should be online and in-store (directly off the shelf and ShiptoHome orders)
Member discount 10% applies on in-store orders.
Backordered of OOS titles are not usual allowed, but most items that go OOS tend to come and go frequently though some new titles could be a bit short given all the replication plant delays or partial deliveries lately.

All items releasing prior to Dec 3 should be discounted from the start of the sale. Whether any Dec or later releases will be allowed through the ship to home system is to be determined.

As usual, I need B&N's gift card deals to splurge on Criterion releases. Also hoping Family Dollar would revive the kind of deals it used to have in the past on B&N gift cards.

Would be nice those they usually happened after the Criterion Sale ended. I'm not sure if their merger will make such deals less common anyway. I notice a couple days ago that a couple my FD have recently switched over to Dollar Tree.

BN instore deal isn't too bad $10 for 75 though the BF $10 for 50 deals are better though you do have to deal with the redemption delay.

Some of the better Reseller sites have cards for around 17% off now though mostly smaller cards and I expect those will dry up over the next couple weeks. It's already much tighter than it was a few weeks ago. I think I've gotten enough the last couple weeks to let me get most of what I want for Criterions, but I need to get ready for the Dec 40% sale and hope that the British TV sale goes to 60% again this year.

OTOH, I wiped out most of the British stuff last year when combined discounts hit close to 75-80% off.

I'm not a big B&N person. Are you saying that you get 10% additional by purchasing in store? Is this only at certain times of the year? Do you have to be a "member"?

Members get an extra 10% on most instore purchases -- or instore generated ship to home orders since those are considered in-store.

It's actually the main perk of the BN membership though FS on almost all orders can be quite useful

The Bergman set along can almost pay for the membership then it's house money for the rest of the year. If you're a new member and can use the "5 off 50 purchase New Member"
coupon that's $20 of the 25, It's been pretty the the one coupon that scans automatically over the last couple years for Criterions

How do you get deals on the gift cards? I've never really done that part of the sale in years past.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% Off MSRP Sale November 2 through December 3, 2018

Directly at BN?

Usually in early November you can buy $75 (or multiples) of GC in store and they will give you a special "Promo GC" worth $10 for ea $75. Normally these don;t activate until Dec 26. Last year they had an expiration date of 2/28 though other years it's been 3/31. Online you can buy a $75 card and get a $10 e-GC mailed to you after Xmas, but only once per account.

BF week for the last 2-3 years and last year a few days in December they ran a similar deal for $10 promo card for every $50 GC. Again usually only once per account online.

The delayed activation is aggravating for some since BN usually doesn't have a lot of sales from XMAS until June, but last year they had a very nice Arrow sale at the end of Dec that i think I used most of mine on. Otherwise some people just buy some item(s) in store and return them in the return period so you get a normal replacement GC with no expiration.

Other direct GC deals can be had by resellers who buy GC at a big discount from those not going to use them and sell them at some discount 5-18% to those who want them (giftcardgranny is a nice summary site). Some years, stores like Savalot and Family Dollar have sales on GC ($20 for a $25 card). Last year I didn't find any of these sales though some years I have bought up to $1000 and used them for up to 6-12 months depending on what I need.

The resellers have some risk since at least 3 people know the Number/PIN so I strongly suggest using only known sellers with a 60-120+ day guarantee, ALWAYS immediately check the balance as soon as you get it to make sure the load is correct, and don't buy more than you are going to use quickly (and 100% by the end of the exp date). Honestly I try to never partially use a Resold GC -- use the whole thing in one purchase

That sounds too much like work...

Thanks though, I don't usually get enough at these sales to make it worth going through all that.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% Off MSRP Sale November 2 through December 3, 2018

If you just buy a couple things, then the reseller sites can be great since you probably only need one or 2. Nice easy 15+% savings for virtually no work
Just doing one or two to set up an acct is sometimes worth it since it can be nice for buying GC to Restaurants, AMC/Fandango, etc

The BN GC offer works better for those doing bigger amts and through the year purchases

I rarely use B&N, but for the Bergman box they would seem to be a no brainer. Other than the basic sale, all the various coupon & member things sound kinda complicated.

I'm excited about this sale. I've sat out the sales the last couple of years. My money has had to be directed elsewhere, but now that's done. I've got about $200 of gift cards; plus, I just got a promotion and raise. I'm planning to take full advantage.

For folks looking for a more simple GC discount -- no resellers, no promo cards, no expiration

https://www.staples.com/happy-teen-g...oduct_24364753

It appears you can get up to 3 at a time -- $127.50 for $150 so net 15% discount. I don't know if you can make one order per account.
The listing is somewhat confusing since it says in-store only in one place and not available in store in another. As far as I can tell you can get these shipped or do in-store pickup

If you're worried about using them at BN, these cards appear to be cross branded for use also at
Regal Cinemas, American Eagle, Nike, Dave & Buster’s, Sephora, Jamba Juice or Barnes & Noble

75+10 Gift Card Deal is live -- assuming it's up in store already too.
Good through 11/19 when I'm assuming it will be replaced by the 50+10 GC deal on BF.

I did get confirmation from a store confirming the start and end dates of the Criterion Sale.

All go starting tomorrow in store -- exact details of what works and doesn't work about coupon is To Be Determined

Online starts sometime after midnight.
For the optimistic -- COZYREADS coupon allows online 15% OFF $40+ or 20% off $100 online orders for many items (not preorders so the Bergman and 11/20 items are still most likely blocked). I guess we'll see how on top of things the IT guys are on a Friday Start Sale or if the restriction will be lifted for this sale even temporarily

If you look at the Criterions now, before the sale, COZYREADS coupon is listed with all released items. Preorders excluded. Save up to 20% use COZYREADS. It would be nice if they reduced the price before making the code stop working.

Sometimes the "this itme not eligible for coupons" is added before or simulataneously with the price drop.

It's just never exactly the same twice.

A couple of other international posters have reported issues already seeming related to addresses.

At least 1 EU poster got it work by using Saved Address for shipping/billing rather than entering the information directly. I can't remember if he was getting stopped from entering information during checkout or at the final screen. He said Paypal was his issue, but was able to use a Debit Card and only by selecting a "saved address" since the site kept wanting an US address.

An AU poster reported his Address wasn;t being accepted -- sounds like he had done BN purchases in the past. Checking at Bluray.com it appears several more AUS posters now reporting problems

Was able to stop by a B&N store closest to where I work this morning.

Bottle Rocket
The Darjeeling Limited
The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Heart of a Dog

Hoping to go back to pick up a few more off of my list, or just order them online.

i realised that if I only have 1 item in my cart, then I able to check-out with the appropriate shipping charges to Singapore. so i managed to get my Ingmar Bergman collection secured. i have no joy with the rest of the titles though. i reported this to BN online customer service and they replied back saying they are aware of this error and are working to fix it. i hope they do so before the sale is over.

something similar like this happened to me back in 2015 when their international shipping was being wrongly calulated and was inflated. i didn't end up buying anything during that sale.

The other thing being reported (and may be the main issue) is certain items are mainly causing the issue. The most commonly reported are SISTERS and PRINCESS BRIDE, but a handful of other names have popped up too.

So best thing is probably to start with a known OK item and add one at a time to see which items are causing trouble. Several people in contact with CSR have gotten the "Are working on the issue and are aware." Honestly in BN speak that may mean by March it could be resolved. A dozen more complaints from multiple forums yesterday so it's not just affecting certain countries

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% Off MSRP Sale November 2 through December 3, 2018

I bit on the Bergman as planned. I also got bit badly on the sales tax (I hate my state gvt) $164.84 Total.

I haven't used B&N online in years. How quick are they to ship these days (I know this is a pre-order. Will they likely ship by 11/19?) Back in the day (it appears the last time i used them was in 2011!) one of the reasons I stopped was extremely slow packing (weeks from the order date) on in stock items.
