Universal 30 Film Classic Monster Collection - $69.99 @ Amazon (DOtD)
This was posted in the Amazon thread, but thought it deserved its own thread to give it more exposure. It’s also the Deal of the Day:

Damn, if I didn’t already have the first sets of releases, I would have been all over this. I wonder if these have the gimped versions of the 3D movies, or if those have to be sent in for replacement as well.

The set was listed as unavailable at Amazon for a few weeks which hopefully means they now have corrected sets. However we won't know for sure until people start reporting what they received when the set ships. Also on other forums people are complaining the fixed discs received are not much of an improvement .

Supposedly the disc has been replaced now and hte 3D of Revenge of the Creature is correct, but there is still some concern that the 2D version of that movie wasn't corrected properly. Very very few people have gotten the new set and none of the experts on the film have seen the new disc yet so for now it's still under scrutiny
For this price, if you don't have any of the prior set it still is probably worth it for the other 21 movies. If it's the old disc, Universal is running a replacement program, if it's the new disc then the 3D should be fine.
21.5 correct movies and 0.5 possibly less than pristine

Man, that's a good deal. I have the basic set on UK BD, though, and am transitioning to digital so I guess I'll pass.

Just FYI from reports on other forums. Universal fixed the 3D version of Creature when the set went out of stock, but the 2D disc is still messed up and looks like DVD quality.
Still a great price though!

There a difference though -- the 2D BD may not be perfect, but it's still sounded like it better than the DVD.
At worst it sounds like they may have carried over the 2D from the first incorrect disc, but from my reading of those threads as they went through originally that one was still better than DVD quality (and especially better than the prior Revenge DVD).
Comparing some of it to what appears to be the French BD disc most certainly screams it less than it could/should be.
I'm still waiting for Bob F or one of the other experts to get the disc and have a a chance to dissect it -- is it just going to be a bad looking 2D in the US or did Universal only fix part of the disc. I'm betting the latter and Universal then has another choice -- go back and fix it fully or say "that's all" and let people live with 29.5 movies for $70 or 2.5 for $10-15 once then Standalone comes back and drops to Sale Price.

Which is the problem. There are no details about the why, what, or how. Nothing about on the file itself, just lots of hyperbole -- "it looks like ...." "I give it a 3" "They screwed the pooch." Heck most of the reactions are from posters who haven't even seen the discs and are feeding off what someone else says.
It's not even based on capsaholic and screen captures which I already think are a poor enough substitute for evaluating a disc
Nobody had listed the file dates of the items on the discs.
Nobody has posted a BDInfo breakdown -- what's actually on the disc.
Now that more than 2 people appear to have seen the disc I have little doubt left that it just doesn't look good. Judging by what those actual eyes that have seen the new 3D compared back to back to the 2D -- almost certainly it doesn't look as good as it ought to and seems likely it's the same 2D file that was used on the original disc. If it was truly just a terrible all around transfer, the 3D would like bad too -- not just bad and screwed up SBS like it was the first time.
I have seen nothing to say it looks like a DVD on BD, or done at the wrong resolution, it;s worse than or the same as a DVD. There have been plenty of poor transfers in the past using old masters which still offered improvements even if it was less than hoped for or less than it should have been. There were even some 1080i transfers early on and even they were better than the DVD they replaced.
I do know the original BD was already an upgrade over the previous DVD

1. When was Revenge of the Creature released on Blu-ray previously??? AFAIK this was the first region A release.
2. The 2D version was already recalled by Universal, as well as the 3D version. The "updated" 2D disc they sent back out to customers is supposedly exactly the same! They only fixed the 3D copy. I can't see them recalling something for no good reason.

I bit.
I just finished watching The Mummy from the UK base set that was a deal a couple years ago.
And I have the Laurel and Hardy set with those movies so I guess it's a lot of double dipping for me. But enough new stuff, and I may regift the base set.
The math doesn't really add up though?
6+8+6+7+6+1+3 = 37 total films in the various Legacy collections if i'm adding up right.
Still a good deal for a lot of classics though.
Oh, and I read Amazon doesn't give a free month of Prime anymore if your shipment is late? Which of course means their 'guarantee' is basically worthless.
Thanks for the post!

Looks dead. It's no longer on the deal listing and Amazon is not listed as a seller anymore.

I probably wpould have passed. I have the UK blu set; + Frankenstein & Wolfman on Blu; & the others on dvd. I'll probably be looking for deals on the other blu's (especially The Mummy; I'm only missing 2 blu's from the Drac box; Son & Daughter); since I've already bit on 3 & the issues with Lagoon.
