Kino KL Studio Classics - $11.98 (50 titles) until Nov. 13

Knew they'd do this eventually. As much as I wish they were even a bit cheaper and the selection larger, my wallet is somewhat relived:

https://www.kinolorber.com/list/view...monov16?page=1

Not sure what the threshold is, but Free Shipping is an option on the 9-disc order I'm considering, assuming Trouble Man actually gets its price dropped at some point.

Thanks for the tip! There are several from that series I'd like; but not a single 1 in this list.

Per insider at Home Theater Forum Free Shipping on orders over $50 to US and $100 to Canada. I think free shipping offer may not last entire sale period. Boy on a Dolphin is supposed to be included in sale but price hasn't been reduced yet. Sale official starts November 1 to November 13.

Bad timing for a sale, Kino.

Sadly, there's nothing from my "must have" list. Their sale last year was more interesting, but I didn't buy anything then either. I don't typically bite much above $12.50, and it seems the only way to get Kino titles at a decent price is picking them off 1 or 2 at a time. I started doing this again a month ago, via Amazon (1), Jet (2), and Family Video (2). It's slow but it's progress.

Good to know they offer free shipping into Canada. My potential order of nine would qualify, but Trouble Man is still showing at $20.97. Might just phone this one in instead. Seems like there's always a title or two in a "sale" batch that might not actually be on sale. Even when they had that phenomenal $4.99 blowout earlier this year (I think?) there was at least one title that wasn't actually sale-priced. Perhaps they're banking on people just clicking the little "add to cart" buttons with abandon and not realizing they've added a $20+ item to their cart?

Would've been nice if they'd started it a week ago and loaded in more of the great sci-fi and horror items from their catalogue. Seems like more than a few low-sellers in this batch. Still, happy to get several that I need in one swoop instead of the usual piecemeal method.

There are a couple I want but not enough to get to the free shipping threshold (and I just checked single item shipping and they want $8, no freaking way). I will say if anybody needs a title or two to put them over the threshold...both F/X's are fantastic. Truly underrated the both of them.

Re: Kino KL Studio Classics - $11.98 (50 titles) until Nov. 13

Just noticed a price drops on a bunch of Studio Classics on Amazon, albeit to $13.99, but since shipping kills the Kino deal for some folks, they might find some consolation at Amazon. Titles I noticed because they're saved in my cart, but there could be more: Shield For Murder, 99 River Street, Hidden Fear, Modestly Blaise, Magnetic Monster, Phantom from 10,000 Leagues, Black Sleep, Journey to the Seventh Planet, Siege of Firebase Gloria.

Re: Kino KL Studio Classics - $11.98 (50 titles) until Nov. 13

Boy on a Dolphin and Trouble Man are now $11.98.

Thanks for the full lists, by the way.

In for:

Boomerang
Cry of the City
House on 92nd Street
Chosen Survivors
Canadian Pacific
The Cariboo Trail
F/X
F/X2
Trouble Man
Yongary, Monster From the Deep
Curse of the Faceless Man
Siege of Firebase Gloria
Man on Fire

All upgrades except Cry of the City (which I've seen nonetheless) and the two Canadian westerns, about which I'm more curious about the colour process (and the related documentaries) than the films themselves!

I usually skip Kino releases because they almost never include subtitles. Are they improving in that area - for example, Cry of the City, which is one of their newest releases? --Peter

Re: Kino KL Studio Classics - $11.98 (50 titles) until Nov. 13

Perhaps someone else knows for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if that one doesn't, as it's only previous incarnation was as an MOD disc from Fox Cinema Archives (and rather surprisingly, considering how great it is). I believe the UK region B edition has subs (and different supplements), if you're capable.

I have quite a few Kino discs with subs, but I suspect that's only because previous DVDs had them as well.

FYI, Magnetic Monster and Black Sleep were $12.49 and $12.99 respectively until very recently, so the prices actually went up! MM was my Kino Amazon buy.

On the insider's thread at Home Theater Forum they mentioned that all their new releases beginning I think in September would have closed captions. They will not revisit their prior releases to add closed captioning. Just going forward.

Thanks for the info on subtitles - I am region-free and have picked up a number of BFI and Masters of Cinema when they've gone on sale. Cry of the City was one I just priced a day or two ago at Amazon UK - with the current conversion it appeared to be around $14 or $15, and I believe includes a booklet as well as some additional bonus features. --Peter

Better than previous KL sales. Am I missing something on the "bad timing for a sale" thing or are these normally around $9.99? Previously, I have bought many KL titles from Amazon.

don't recall if it was last year or the year before but the titles were $9.99 in that sale, around the same time of the year I believe.

I've picked up the occasional under-$10 Blu-ray at Kino but I don't really remember a sale like that! Damn. I do remember that sort-of "test" sale they ran on Amazon.ca, which worked out to just over $11 U.S. a disc (shipped, if you ordered more than a couple) for American buyers, but if they ever have a substantial $10 sale I'll truly go bankrupt.

Despite these good deals, I'm still kinda dreading the day when they start repackaging their titles into budget-minded boxed sets or 4-Film Favorites-style collections. They've already done it once, but their catalog is massive enough now that there's really no end to the kinds of (potentially space-saving) combinations they could whip up: space adventures, creature features, vintage horror, star-based combos (Chuck Norris, Burt Lancaster, etc.).

It was almost certainly last year when Kino ran that $9.99 sale. There were at least 50 titles but certainly no more than 100, and I couldn't find enough "must haves" for the $50 free shipping (?) so passed.

Yeah, I bought the "Dark Side of Cinema" collection shortly after it was released. "Big House USA" was one of my $9.99 picks and am glad I waited. I try to avoid double-dipping unless the BD is an upgrade in every way (picture quality, extras, etc.), so don't mind waiting them out.

That's right, checked my order date and it was last year. At least one title from this sale 'Salaam Bombay' was $9.99 on that one. That's a psychological limit for KL titles on a sale. Otherwise, patience is a virtue

I ultimately decided to sit this one out. I'm hoping for a wider selection down the road.
