Re: 4K / Ultra HD Blu-ray: Discounts and deals

Buydig has this deal, which is actually quite fantastic for an OLED and they throw in a UHD Blu-ray player, too. I remember paying about $1500 for my Panny plasma, so an Oled for that price is right on. I don't believe the TV is 3-D, so there's that, but the player is.

Costco has it right now for $189.99 until Nov 28th. And the model is rebranded to UBD-KM85C, but it's the same as the K8500.

You are correct. The G6 and E6 are 3D. The B6 and C6 are not.

Yeah, the c6 is curved and 3d, and also selling for $1799. I'm very close to picking this TV up.

Quick question on these 4K players - do they all handle 3-D, or is that a format that's slowly being abandoned? --peter

Crutchfield also has the LG's for $1800. No Samsung player, but they are a first class etailer and only charge sales tax in Virginia.

Beach Camera is has a bundle also with the Samsung UHD player on their Amazon store. It was included for free, but it looks like with this latest price drop, it's an extra $100 now instead ($1899).

Fry's does a "We pay sales tax" promotion on their 4K TVs, so that's a small discount (8% around here). I was going to see if they would match Beach's bundle too.

There are currently only 4 choices for UHD BD players (Samsung, Philips, Panasonic, and XBox One S), and they all support 3D playback.

The 4K players do - for Blu-ray discs...Ultra HD doesn't support the 3D format, and fewer and fewer 4K TVs support it as well (one of the reasons I got an LG set).

From stuff I've read elsewhere in more tech-related media blogs, etc., my understanding is that 3D is in the 4K spec although it is not being implemented by any manufacturers at this time... so frankly, I'm surprised that some 4K sets show any 3D at all. I've never seen 3D on the feature list of any box of a 4K set. Anyone got some makes and model numbers? I'd like to check them out.

If they do, and I'm presuming from comments here, that they do... does the 3D look better than on 1080 sets?

I would presume (again) that they do... but then I'm the presumptuous type.

Not necessarily...although LG does a really good job with their 3D. I had a VIZIO TV before my current LG that I thought did 3D very well, and my new LG (which is an even bigger screen, so I wouldn't think it would be as good) blows my old set out of the water.

Yes, 4K can support 3D, but it wasn't part of the specs or plans when Ultra HD was designed, so we won't be seeing any 4K 3D movies anytime soon on that format - if ever.

So I went to Fry's last night to pick up the LG OLED55C6P set. I was surprised when I asked them about the "We Pay Sales Tax" promotion, that he said it was not valid in Illinois. I've gotten so many emails, some dedicated to this 4K promotion, and none mention this limitation. You have to click a small question mark in the ad to get to a page with the disclaimer.

I wasn't happy, but they gave me the deal anyway, so I basically came in and got the worst price that I was expecting (I was hoping to get a better deal on a bundle with the 4K player).

Anyway, they gave me $140, and I'll pick it up today.

Here is an example of the ? in the ad

Re: 4K / Ultra HD Blu-ray: Discounts and deals

I guess that's an Illinois law? That is weird there is no disclaimer on it. I was close to getting a TV a while back and they touted how the sales tax was paid by them, so I guess it's a state based thing. But they definitely need to disclaim that.

I just assumed they weren't really paying the sales tax, rather they dropped the price of the product down so that the final price is the same. Which in effect is what they did for me anyway when I complained. I have to imagine that they know that they are in a gray area with false advertising. I did not even know that the ? was clickable.

Yeah, if you click the ? in the ad, it directs you to this page

Is your LG a 4K set and does it use passive 3D glasses? What model, if you don't mind me asking?

I ask because my son got a passive 3D LG set about 4 years ago and it looks great. When we went looking for a new TV we found a great deal on a Sony 70" that also uses a passive system (unlike the other Sony sets at the time). When we have a large gathering he brings his glasses along.

Wow, great find, thank you. Too bad I have 2 of the 3, but I'll gladly pick up Revenant for that price.
