Per Amazon website:

What is Prime Day?
Prime Day is a one-day shopping event on July 15, 2015, with more deals than Black Friday. Prime members can shop exclusive deals from electronics, toys, video games, movies, clothing, patio, lawn and garden, sports and outdoor items and more.

Basically this is a promo to get people to sign up for Amazon Prime. Hopefully there will be some good deals.

This is also happening on international Amazon sites so be on the lookout for some decent Blu ray box sets from Amazon UK.

Don't know if they would allow it but there is a 30 day free trial for Prime on the UK site.

Exactly, I jumped on Prime a couple of years ago when they offered $20 off the $79 price it was at the time. For us in HI only benefit we get is not having to find $35 worth of stuff to get free shipping. Because we sure do not get 2 Day shipping as Prime members on the mainland.

It looks like Amazon hopes to build this up as an annual sales event. It's probably a way to lower inventory levels and move dead stock in the summer.

Also remember just because they say there are going to be more deals doesn't mean the deals are going to be as good as Black Friday. As I recall Black Friday week deals weren't as good last year as in previous years.

And drive traffic during a slow period. Release schedules usually slow down in the summer, and vacationers don't shop online as much.

But only to people who aren't current customers of prime. But you need prime to get the deal. Endless loop.

Black Friday basically consists of what hariseldon was making fun of: Amazon pricematching other people's ads. If the deals are actually going to be good, I'd think you're better off at slickdeals or whatever, I think we'll be lagging behind all the scalpers.

Actually last year was the first time I can remember they didn't have a DVD/BD calendar of LDs. They had a few unique deals, but I can't think of one right now since I didn't take advantage of any. They also didn't PM as many BD/DVD deals as in year's past. The only real advantage of having my Prime trial was that I took advantage of alot of MP deals. Otherwise it was basically a bust.

I expect a few good deals, but for the most part they will be disappointing. But then even when Amazon was actually trying to be competitive, most of the BF deals were mediocre, with a few really good ones thrown in.

Black Friday on Amazon this past year was so worthless, I bought exactly ZERO things. In prior years, I'd spent hundred on Blu-rays.

Hopefully this PRIME thing isn't just Amazon offering the same deals on the same Blu-rays and DVDs we've seen in Black Fridays (and Gold Boxes) past. But I'm guessing it will be.

There's been no indication that the deals will be BETTER or the SAME as Black Friday.

All they've said is they'll be MORE deals than Black Friday.

They've gotta have at least a few killer deals (though who knows in what categories and in what quantities); I mean, they're advertising this on TV as well, this is a big thing for them.

It's the first year of this special sales day. I imagine Amazon will make an effort to have some actual deals. The rumor is that their phone will be on sale at heavy discount.

Yeah. The word is that they've contacted their shipping partners and warned them of extremely high volumes, and I'd like to think that's because they're pricing stuff to sell.

More likely it is an attempt to build up Amazon Prime Memberships.

Since Amazon has yet to turn a profit, I would not be stunned to see them eventually require Prime to shop for discounts on their web site, as they eliminate more and more B&M competition.

I could see this happening, where Amazon becomes like Costco...a nice depth of assorted goods for prices that are usually below what you find at chains like Best Buy, but you need to pay for the membership fee to be admitted (and I could see them eventually making you pay the fee, and setting a minimum limit to qualify for free shipping).

The TV ads do make me think that there will be at least a few great deals, but who knows in what categories, numbers, and in how much depth they'll stock them? Maybe there'll be a tv series for $3 a season, but if it's not one that a buyer wants, then it's not any great deal to them. But they could surprise, we'll see.

Hit the link in my sig to see how I did BF 2014 when I barely bought anything in 2013. Mileage varies. The more you collect, the less deals there seem to be.

I've heard rumors of a new subscription site launching this fall that may be prove to be a viable competitor for Amazon, so I'm wondering if the purpose of Prime Day is to lock more members in to a year subscription to dissuade them from also subscribing to this other site. If so, a discount on Prime seems likely.

Who would be better than Amazon, when it comes to shipping logistics, though. Not to mention product selection. Even free shipping is relatively fast. I'd be curious who this other competitor is.
