Re: Criterion Collection 24hr FLASH SALE 50% OFF!
You can thank me. This morning I was reading a review of a recent Criterion release and I said to myself: "I think it's about time for one of Criterion's flash sales". 2 Hours later...

Meh these sales don't really appeal to me because even at half off most Criterion discs still come out to be regular price or higher than most normal Blu-ray releases. There are a few I wouldn't mind getting but I'll wait until they're lower or I'll just find them used.

Re: Criterion Collection 24hr FLASH SALE 50% OFF!
The only way you can get them at lower prices is using coupons during the B&N sale. Even then, it's really only lower with the titles higher than a $40 list price because using coupons on the $40 titles is very hit or miss, mostly miss. As a Criterion collector, I prefer buying directly from Criterion so I don't have to pay sales tax and you earn a $50 gift certificate on purchases over $500 which is essentially a 10% discount (same as B&N membership). And I don't have to deal with B&N and their coupons. It's not easy finding Criterions Bu-rays used for less than this price. If you are a cinephile, you understand why this is a good deal. I'd rather pay these prices for a Criterion than $5 for most of the dreck released to theaters and then on BD.

Re: Criterion Collection 24hr FLASH SALE 50% OFF!
Good point. It's usually the member coupons that are mostly miss. A 15 or 20% coupon is usually accepted but I have been turned down on those too. It all depends on how the person at the register interprets the restrictions. I used to buy all my Criterions from B&N but the store I used closed and the remaining ones are more restrictive. Now I tend to wait for Criterion's Flash sales.

I scooped up:
The Sword of Doom
Watership Down
Fellini Satyricon
The Soft Skin
Every Man For Himself
La Cienaga
Don't Look Now
They also sent me a $50 coupon, so I may go back in there and scoop up a few more.

I normally wait for the B&N sales... but I don't mind knocking a few wants off the list to give money directly to Criterion.
Ordered:
Don't Look Now
Safe
The Soft Skin

Snooze and lose. Time Bandits is now showing on back order and not available for this SPRING sale. That's the one I wanted the most, so I'm out.

I got a $50 gift certificate too. There is no mention of an expiration date. Does anyone know if these expire? If not, I will consider saving mine until the next flash sale: quite a few future releases that I covet...

Re: Criterion Collection 24hr FLASH SALE 50% OFF!
I will wait for the next Barnes and Noble sale where there will hopefully be a coupon to use or Costco where the $49.00 sets they have carried are $19.99.
I wish Criterion would release a Preston Sturges box set since they have already released several of his films. Imagine a blu ray set of The Great McGinty, Christmas in July plus The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, and Palm Beach Story.

Jealous! I knew that Don't Look Now would quickly go out of stock, and I should've ordered when I first saw the announcement. By the time I sat down later in the afternoon to order, it was long gone.
This was a small order for me. Just grabbed Fellini Satyricon, The Palm Beach Story, and, at my wife's insistence , Tootsie.

Anybody else a little mystified by what is essentially the source "selling out" of some titles so quickly. It's not like these titles are going our of print and will not be available again. Seems like a real bad selling strategy given the could still take orders and make it clear they wouldn't ship for a couple weeks. Which is exactly what Amazon did with the many Magnolia titles they recently had on sale.

Re: Criterion Collection 24hr FLASH SALE 50% OFF!
Criterion's flash sales are always the same: it only applies to In Stock items. That means no pre-orders and when stock runs out you can no longer order it. It's clear they don't want to have to deal with partial shipments and waiting for pre-orders and backorders to complete the order. That increases their shipping costs etc. I suppose they could hold your entire order while they wait for pre-orders and backorders but then people would complain about that. I'm fine with the way it is; after all, they don't have the resources of Amazon.

I've been waiting to use my $10 Criterion gift certificate for over 3 years now, but these sales always pop up when I'm too broke to place an order.

I guess I'm the one person that got the Zatoichi set. Is that because everyone else already bought it?
