Yay! I've been waiting for months for this to go down in price.

Still almost twice what I paid, with shipping, at Amazon UK.

So the discs are in sleeves and Creature From the Black Lagoon is defective according to reviews? I think I'll still have to pass.

This is the most overpriced set I have seen in a while. I got the UK set for around 35, which is about the most I would pay for this. This is not Star Wars.

I really see this being $29.99 eventually, I'm passing.

After markdowns and currency conversion, the UK set is currently ~$43 shipped by itself from Amazon UK. (Link)

This is true. I was willing to pay a lot more for this set than Star Wars.

AFAIK the only difference between the US and the UK set, content wise, is that the UK set is missing one of the commentary tracks on Dracula.

What is the defect for Creature? My UK version played great. I didn't notice anything.

It was vastly overpriced to begin with and I am not sure there is a huge potential market for this set. Most people only want one or two of the movies in it, beyond the hardcore collectors. I expect it to continue dropping in price, both in the US and the UK.

I don't understand why anyone would choose this over the UK set. Anyone?

They don't like the ratings numbers on the cover?

I don't own a single copy of any STAR WARS movie in any format.

About as much a thing to brag about as, "I don't get vaccinations! "

Who said I was bragging? Just stating a fact relative to the post about STAR WARS being somehow more worthy of purchase than this set. Not everyone has the same tastes or buying priorities.

I generally mock people who get all OCD over packaging but most foreign logos are hideous and take up a lot more real estate on the cover compared to the relatively-tasteful MPAA ratings.

I'd say that missing commentary is more of a factor on this release. Once they drop actual content I'll generally draw the line. A lot of the older titles in the Bond 50 box set had their original mono tracks dropped to make room for additional foreign language tracks (which is probably what happened here with the Dracula disc) and that's definitely a dealbreaker.

The instant gratification of fast Amazon Prime shipping is yet another factor for me.

Tough one for me. I'll likely go for the UK set while it's still on special, though that missing commentary track is what's kept me from pulling the trigger so far. Even being the completest that I am though, it's hard to justify an additional $40 for one commentary track.

I still say the fact that Frankenstein vs Wolfman is not part of this is a huge reason why it doesn't really feel complete.

Re: Amazon DOTW 1/13 - 1/19: Universal Classic Monsters Collection $79.99

I remember one of the commentary tracks on either Frankenstein or Dracula (or perhaps it was both of them) was extraordinarly dry and mostly stating the obvious ("In this static shot, the actor playing Reinfield will enter the scene on the left, move toward the center. The next shot is an establishing shot...."). If that's the sort of commentary that was dropped, more power to them! --Peter

I've never bought the original trilogy Star Wars movies .. except used for a buck. Never been cheap enough and I'm not a huge fan.

The point was there is much more demand for Star Wars than this and the Universal Monster set has much more potential for price drops and sales than something that is (almost) UNIVERSALly loved.

The lack of Star Wars love in this thread is very upsetting to me. I shall not return to this thread...

Re: Amazon DOTW 1/13 - 1/19: Universal Classic Monsters Collection $79.99

Aside from the dropped commentary on Dracula and the additional languages/subs, are there any other differences between the UK and US sets? I've did some searching but couldn't find any AV comparisons.

Sorry, those aren't valid $40 reasons.
