Assume that all of these are available to all customers unless specifically listed as member only like the Welcome Package. Also remember that any preliminary codes are just that and BN could pull it, change the details or exclusions anything prior to release so always a bit of YMMV until the final release date

I couldn't pass this up. I already own Jaws, Jurassic Park, and E.T., but only on DVD. So I get to upgrade those three plus pick up five more. Nice deal.

Does anyone know if the E.T. bluray in this set includes the updated cut?

No If you like guys handling their walkies like shotguns, and C.G.E.T., keep that DVD set around.

That was only ever released on the 2002 DVD release. Spielberg doesn't like it now, so it wasn't released (and never will be) on Blu-ray or 4K, which only have the original theatrical version.

The Sopranos: Complete Series for $49.99 on both Amazon and Best Buy.

For RED card holders, Target price matches either store.

I have a love-hate relationship with the special edition. There are certain updated effects that I like (the levitating clay planets, E.T. running through the forest), but the cartoony E.T. and the walkies bug me. In the end, I'll be fine with parting with my DVD set in favor of the blu that doesn't have the special edition on it.

I'm the same way, but in my case it's why I'll be keeping the DVD. It's fun to pop in see those updated scenes despite preferring the original. And like the Star Wars SE's, it's a shame that we will never get a release with the few effect updates that are improvements and lose the actual changes that are total garbage.

Hmmm...I've been wanting to see Baby Driver. Should I buy now or wait for a deal on the 4k release?

I’d personally wait for the 4K one. The standard blu got so-so ratings on PQ. The 4K looks outstanding with a great Atmos track to boost.

Dunno how much this will float as a conspiracy theory but is there a possibility that BD PQs are being deliberately lowered in quality to boost sales of their 4K counterparta ? I mean, its such a new flick and there should be no reason why a mature format can't afford to provide great PQ

I've heard and tolerated many a nutty conspiracy theory, but I really have been thinking this lately!

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

I’ve read several reviews, including one from bluray.com that extols the pq of Dunkirk. It was mastered at a higher bit rate, of course limited by the depth of blu ray. Otherwise an excellent video. Also, iTunes would convert these to 4k, I think. So right now I do not hesitate buying movies I really like on blu ray when on sale.

The same arguments were made about DVD vs. Blu-ray ten or eleven years ago.

I'm skeptical that it's a deliberate thing, but I can imagine that lower BD sales might result in 'rushed' discs, while UHD BD (despite its tiny marketshare) might be getting more of a white glove treatment because of its premium status and/or because less mature authoring tools require more direct involvement.

I’m not seeing much white glove treatment from some studios, Warner Bros in particular. They could have done the Nolan Batman 4k from scans of the original negatives and kicked DNR to the curb, but instead they went cheap on the scan and the unnecessary DNR is bizarrely sporadic but total waxworks when it appears. Terminator 2 is a well publicized horror fest of DNR and blanket color washing.

They will all have guaranteed re-releases - those franchises are cashcows - whether done wrong hurriedly or given the royal treatment, there are large swathes of consumers that will bite due to the latest/greatest format.

I can't speak to the DNR, but with as closely involved as Nolan was in the remastering, I strongly suspect that using the interpositive as a source was a deliberate decision on his part rather than Warner cheaping out. When prepping The Dark Knight for IMAX, he and his team used an interpositive as the source for the 35mm footage too, despite the not-altogether-appealing combination of generation loss and a large screen.

But, yeah, even though I haven't seen these discs with my own eyes, it's hard to be all that excited about 'em with what pretty much everyone seems to be saying (especially the lackluster black levels).

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

I've heard the studios are having a difficult time in the transition from mastering movies intended for Blu-ray to HDR-enabled UHD. Digital color grading and other mastering issues for UHD have a steep learning curve. Which is one of the reasons why we've gotten some erratic results on UHD early in its lifespan.

All that attention paid to UHD has often made the Blu-ray an afterthought for new releases. The UHD to BD downconversion isn't an automatic process, further complicating things.

I've heard Nolan likes movies that look soft rather than sharp and well-defined, which informs what photographic techniques he uses during filming. Generation loss is another way to get more fuzziness.
