I went in to pick up my pre-paid copy (planning to buy one for my brother from Amazon) and I saw just one on the shelf marked for $99.99. I grabbed it and it rang up $39.99.

I was hoping the rumor of Movie Money for The Hobbit being included with this set would be true and got it for instore pickup. It was not, unfortunately, but I may keep it instead of getting the tax-free Amazon set, due to using the 5% ShopDiscover link and getting another 5% quarterly "online shopping" cashback that makes up for the extra tax that is less than 10%


(Hmm.... of course, I also get 5% cashback from Amazon purchases this quarter from either my Discover Card or my Chase Freedom, instead of the usual 3% from my Chase Amazon Visa, so combined with the lack of a 7% sales tax, it may be a little better to order from Amazon by about 81 cents....)

If all you care about is owning the films, you could pick up the Target exclusive individual extended edition blu-rays for $10 each. Each disc also has $5 movie cash for The Hobbit.

Exactly. That is what I did. I have a friend who has the big set if I ever want to delve into the extras (which is unlikely since I had the huge dvd set for years and never once watched any extras from it). $15 for the non-extras set is an awesome deal since I knew I was going to be buying 3 tickets to The Hobbit.
