Thanks for the tip on Buzz guys. I will try this a few times and see if it works. Already got my code!

I almost signed up for Buzz but I don't like the idea of them monitoring my purchases and contacting me about various things based on my purchasing habits.

Listen, there are a lot of people on here who have tried like hell to get B&N e-mails and/or mail without any success. If you are getting stuff from them you don't want, I would think you could unsubscribe rather easily.
Buzz is their vehicle for text messages, and they indicated that a reply of "STOP" will end that.

They can't do that for me. I never ever use the Visa I registered with them. I use my B&N MC. Obviously this means I only use the in-store BN Buzz coupon codes, and never the online codes...

Well, there lies the problem for me as the Visa that I would have to register would be the one I use on everything from buying on Amazon, buying groceries and paying a few of my bills like cell and cable. I really don't want them monitoring all of that and watching for buying habits to fill up my email and likely my mailbox with even more "offers".

I guess it depends on the cashier. Technically it's once per transaction. The cashier today was very resistant to me using it twice, so I didn't. I am going to try using it at a different store in the next few days, so I'll report if I can use it again. All I can say is try it for the time being. It should work at least once.

It's definitely a YMMV applying the BN buzz text "coupons" to this sale. I've tried at two Seattle-area B&Ns, and each time the cashiers were ready with the fine print from the Buzz sign-in page that has the same "may not be combined with any other coupon or promotional discount" that they use to justify blocking the mystery coupons for this sale.

Does anyone know the best way to return an online order in-store with the least amount of hassle? Do I need to open the package up in front of them to prove it's legit?

No. Just have your receipt that came with the item(s). If you have an old B&N bag, that's better than haulin' in the box.
