Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Nicholasville, KY is on the way out... Picked up Cosmopolis for $5. Pretty much the same selection available at the Lexington stores when they went under.
A few (clean) CC DVDs in sleeves at a $1 each though if you need them... The Third Man (remastered), The Vanishing, Grey Gardens, Man Bites Dog. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Bought Grey's Anatomy Complete Season 4 for $3.99
We Need to Talk to Kevin $9.99 |

And now for the punchline... I've never seen even 1 microsecond of any episode of Grey's Anatomy. I don't even know who's in it or what it's about (doctors, I think), but I bought it anyway because it was cheap and I'm a sucker for deals. Plus I must keep my backlog growing to make sure I can never catch up. I'd have to watch the prior 3 seasons before I even watched it. Who knows if those are on Netflix or when I'd ever have time to watch them there when I never even made it through Lost, Mad Men, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and a bunch of other series I own. I pretty much waste my free Netflix subscription. Oh well. Maybe someday I'll just sell off Grey's Anatomy S4 if I ever get time. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Blockbuster in Jenks, Oklahoma closing. Prices were still in the 5.99-7.99 prev viewed section and only 30% off on new blu's.
I did score Shriek, Forever After on BD/DVD and Coraline 3D/BD combo priced at 9ea though! |

In the various sales I've attended over the years, I've never seen anything but S4 on sale there. So why is it Blockbuster stores have so many copies of Grey's Anatomy S4 on BD.

Forget Grey's Anatomy, you have some fantastic stuff to work through there. Breaking Bad FIRST. Then Mad Men, Then Walking Dead or LOST. Both character studies, with LOST really losing its way (see what I did there) its last couple of seasons. I maintain the season 3 LOST 2 hour season finale is the greatest 2 hours of network television I have ever had the pleasure of watching. |

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Last week that both of my local stores are open, so everything was heavily clearanced and picked through. Did find a couple things worth picking up:
$1.99 each The Woman in Black Land of the Dead Killer Elite Speed Racer Primal Fear The Debt Silent House The Holiday The Scorpion King $2.99 each (brand new) Let Me In (w/slip) S.W.A.T. Terminator 3 and a 360 game (Shadow of the Damned) for $7.50. Overall a pretty good haul. Goodbye Blockbuster, I will miss your 5/$20 deals from time to time :( |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
A couple of days ago I walked away with a pretty sweet deal when the blockbuster in sac was selling off blu's at 4.99
I got The Woman in Black Paul The Grey Centurion Rec The White Ribbon I was only charged 1.99 for two of them, I got greedy and tried to do it again but it turns the cashier girl just simply charged me wrong. I was trying to get Green Hornet and The Kids are all Right at those prices. This is all kinda moot as the same location is now selling everything off at 1.99, I picked up about 19 movies on Monday. Including stuff like Good, the bad, the Weird The Secret in their Eyes Precious World's Greatest Dad A Better Life |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
The store by my house is on it's last 4 days and everything was $2 yesterday. The Allen Park store is down to a buck for everything, so I got about 30 DVDs and BDs for my g/f and I. Going to hit Ferndale on the way home.
EDIT: Royal Oak and Allen Park close at 6 pm Saturday; RO was $1 yesterday when I stopped in. Ferndale is open until late April and pretty stocked, but at $5 or $6 each for cased stuff which is a non-starter when you've been paying <$3. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
The Blockbuster by me was a complete bust. The sleeved Blu-rays were completely picked over already and the cased Blu-rays don't have any titles worth owning even if/when prices drop down below $3.99.
Did manage to pick up 2 disc-only Criterion DVDs for $0.99 each at least, Man Bites Dog and The Vanishing. The only other Criterion DVDs they had were Disc 1 of The Third Man and Disc 1 of In The Mood For Love, both of which I already own on Blu-ray. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
My local store is down to $3.99/title. Picked up 'Seeking a Friend For the End of the World' on BD (unfortunately is a Rental version, but still lists a bunch of extras). They only had one left, so I thought I'd buy it now rather than risk waiting for another price drop. I might go back for 'Moonrise Kingdom', they had a couple of those left.
Also grabbed a disc-only Criterion DVD of '"In The Mood For Love". There's still a fair amount of BD's left on the shelves, but not many titles I'd be interested in until they drop to $1.99 or less (which I know they will in the final week). |

Picked up 16 various titles today for $1.99 each from store at Bryant and Memorial in OKC. Store closes Saturday.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
My nearest location closes this Sunday, so I'll head out sometime this weekend to give it one last look over. Blu-rays were down to $3.99 last week, but I saw very little I wanted that wasn't a rental exclusive or something I'd already picked up from their 5 for $20 sales. I had Cosmopolis in my hand a couple weeks ago, but put it back in hopes of getting it for less later on. If it's already sold by now, I won't lose sleep over it. I did try to buy a shelving unit for $50. The clerk told me to call the manager on Monday to arrange the pick-up, but when I finally spoke to her she said that every fixture in the store had already been promised to a single buyer.
UPDATE: Swung by today and saw that the blus were only down to $2.99. Turns out I was misinformed and they aren't closing for another two weeks. Still, it's already slim pickings at this point. I can't imagine anything worth buying will be left after this weekend. The two Cosmopolis blu-rays I saw earlier were already gone (Johnny Zhivago probably scored the last one! ;)), but I did buy the only copies left of these: The Devil's Double Hostel: Director's Cut (Figured this might go OOP with the Mill Creek version on the market.) Beastly (It's for my, um... sister? :o) The Orphanage (Finally upgrading my DVD of this great movie. I believe I've seen this same lone copy sitting on the shelf for over two years now.) And two DVDs in paper sleeves for $0.99: A Little Romance (Laurence Olivier, Diane Lane) Wendy and Lucy (Michelle Williams) Sadly, no Criterions in sight. :( |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
My local store was scheduled to close tomorrow, but has been extended through April 21st. All pre-viewed discs (DVD and BD) are currently $2.99, then they drop to $1.99 next week, then $.99 for the final week.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
I've noticed on my past few trips that the prices are NOT as posted (i.e. $1.99, $2.99) but rather a percentage markdown from the original price which you can't know because there are no price tags on the rental stock. I'd been noticing a disparity between what basic multiplication indicates what prices should be - e.g. 8 movies at $2.99 should be $23.92 plus 6% tax ($1.44) should be $25.36, but they'd charge me about a dollar less.
The Grosse Pointe store wrapped yesterday with prices of not .99, but $1.29 because they figure the rich folks could pay more. Whatever. I bought a pile of stuff, did some quick math in my head because if I took my pants off to count to 21 people would've had a cow, and had a ballpark idea of what the total would be. At a buck-thirty I'd expected to pay ~$32 for a couple dozen titles and when I was charged about $26, I decided to actually look at how the pricing was done. That's when I discovered this: • $9.99 titles had a $8.69 "coupon" for an end price of $1.30 - 87% off • $6.99 titles had a $6.08 "coupon" for an end price of $0.91 - • $4.99 titles had a $4.34 "coupon" for an end price of $0.65 • Sleeved DVDs were treated as $3.99 titles with a $3 "coupon" for an end price of 99 cents as advertised It didn't matter if it was DVD or BD, only the price mattered. In the Detroit area, Royal Oak, Allen Park and Grosse Pointe are done; Clawson and Ferndale have a week or two left; AFAIK the 9 Mile & Gratiot, Hoover btwn 9 & 10 Mile (next to Red Lobster) and 18 Mile and Garfield stores will remain open. The BBV site store locator has been diligent about knocking off the closed stores, but the ones in their final days are listed same as stores that will live. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Many of the blockbuster locations seemed to extend the sale a few weeks, I was all ready to load up on some 1.99 titles until I noticed it would not close until the end of this month, instead of the beginning
|
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
It depends on the lease/rent cycle from what various stores have told me. Some were month-to-month and they closed first; the ones paid through the end of the month are taking their time.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Local store went down to $1.99 for everything on Monday. Picked up 'Moonrise Kingdom', 'Planet Terror' (2-discs), 'Your Sister's Sister' and 'The King's Speech'.
At $.99 I might go back for a couple more Rental titles ('The Debt', 'Crazy Heart'). |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
My store is closing next Sunday (4/21), so should prices be down to $0.99 by Monday? I stopped in this morning and everything was $1.99. Someone on another forum told me the markdowns usually happen on Friday, but that would only leave the last three days to snag the $0.99 titles.
Picked up the last copies of these: Battle for Terra The FP (DVD) - Mainly because it's a Drafthouse Films release with cool Tyler Stout coverart. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
For my local store, the markdowns changed on a Monday.
Last Sunday all discs were $2.99, on Monday AM they were $1.99. I'm assuming that the final markdown to $.99 will come this weekend (4/15). The store is also closing 4/21. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
Thanks, that's what I suspected. It didn't appear much had been sold since last Friday, probably because the remaining titles were so mediocre. There were only a couple left I would consider buying at $0.99.
UPDATE: Had this morning off, so I went by at 10:00am to get first crack at the $0.99 titles. Turns out, they open an hour later Mon-Thurs (oops!), so I decided to kill a little time by checking out a couple thrift stores. Drove back just before 11:00am to find a hand-written note on the door indicating they wouldn't be open until "1 PM or so", so I went to work empty-handed. Didn't want to waste any more gas attempting another trip, so I called before heading out on my lunch break. The store had finally opened, but the employee told me prices were still $1.99. Closing day is still scheduled for this Sunday, so maybe they are saving the final markdown for the last three days? |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
So, do the stores actually get shipments in the final weeks?
I was in a closing store last week, and they had a sign saying sinething like check back next week for new shipments. They had nothing when I was there, they close 4/20, and it's about 25 minutes away. Just not sure if the trip is worth my time or not. |
Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012
I'm not sure how it works, but I know that when the most recent store by me closed, they had some previously viewed games the last week that weren't there before
