I'm guessing that the vast majority of fans are fans of the movie, and not any of the comic books (most of which center around completely different characters, especially considering that the team debuted in 1969). In the same way that very few Men in Black, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Big Hero 6, 300, Road to Perdition, etc. fans read those comics first (or likely ever).

I see the Guardians steelbook as the prime example of what studios should be doing when creating special packaging. Slight modifications to normal packaging types, that are truely unique and are specific to the movie contained within. It doesn't hurt that the movie was a huge hit just a few months ago.
Speaking only for myself, the ony reason I buy anything during release week anymore is if there is special content/package that will not be there when the same movie hits the bargain bins or just the next Black Friday. This Guardians steelbook certainly fit that description.

With those that don't care for it. Loved the movie. Preordered the standard case 3D bluray. Pretty OCD about matching cases. Want all the marvel movies to look the same on my shelf. Have the steelbooks for the Nolan Batman trilogy. That is about it.

I wasn't going to get the steelbook, but if they still have some when I go Saturday I might pick one up. The design on that is awesome, with the sticker on the book, the controls on the spine, and the tabs that hold the discs doubling as the things that turn the tape.

^I generally don't purchase Steelbooks but *that* one is pretty cool! FWIW - those "things that turn the tape" are called the supply spindle and take up spindle.

I stopped in at BB yesterday and they still had a handful of non-Steel 3D/BR/Digital packs, but not many.
It looks like Target is doing well with these too. I stopped by Thursday also, had a suspicion after looking at the display and confirmed it with the reps. That store had sold out entirely of the Guardians of the Galaxy 3D/BR/Digital pack. Other stores in the area still had it, but all the stores I'd seen had gotten in quite a few, so anecdotally they seem to be selling well.

When I picked up my steel book of GotG, the guy behind the counter congratulated me for being one of the few to get this version. I thanked him... but found it really strange.

The movie does a really good job of adapting the tone and story elements of the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series (and the Annihilation Conquest mini-series where Starlord gathers a team from prison to help him save the universe). The stories are not the same, but the comics do have the same sense of humor and there are lots of nods to the comic. All of the team members from the movies are on the team in the comic at some point, all though there are more members in the comic. The big Celestial head, Knowhere, is there base of operations, the dog in the post credit scene is a regular character in the comic book, etc. This is one movie that felt like it was made for the fans of the 2008 comic book series. There is a new series which started to coincide with the movie, but it's by a different writer and I haven't kept up with it.
Also, I love the steelbook

That is the DVD version in the ad and it's $19.99. The ad shows "DVD ...$17.99-$34.99 each" and pictures several titles. The BD version of TD $24.99.

Ack, sorry about that. I'm new to Blu-Rays (just bought my first HDTV and BD player on Black Friday), so my search image is still not perfected. I'll delete my posts to avoid future confusion.

No one's mentioned it yet it seems : You can buy both Arrow Season 1 & Season 2 Blu Ray Combo packs for $29.99 total. That's a really great deal for a just released TV season on Blu.
Edit : looks like the more expensive Season1 Combo pack is sold out now, but they still have the basic Blu Ray season one set, just not the pack with DVDs and UV code.

Thanks Decker, I took advantage of this promo, and it helped that I had a $10 RZ certificate. So buying these for $10 and change for each season is a great deal.

True Blood S6 is $17.99, and I'm pretty sure it is a price mistake. All the other BD seasons are $24.99. The DVD sets are $17.99. I think they priced it like a DVD set. I ordered one for pick-up. Amazon price-matched them, of course. But BB could catch the mistake, and raise the price $7. I already have the first 5 seasons, so I may as well complete the set. I just need to find a deal on S7, which probably won't happen til next year...

Re: Best Buy / bestbuy.com discounts and deals on Blu-ray
I was at Best Buy just browsing and came across this
Planet Earth ( New 6 disc version with 7 hours of extra footage and new enhanced blu ray tranfer) for $19.99
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/planet-e...&skuId=3521346
Life $19.99
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/life-att...1&skuId=100461
Both are Narrated by David Attenborough
Picked up both ( even though I have the original Planet earth)
I am for one glad, we have Best Buy - despite their quarks
