Went back for Boardwalk Empire today... Game of Thrones bonus disc screwed things up for some reason, But, it worked out when all was said and done.

I do wish that the peeps here could find Road to Perdition though. Grabbed that title on release day and could not have been happier. Outstanding BD and of course, even better film.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

found a cracked copy of an Elmo movie in the back bedroom so I took it in. The CS person even opened the case and looked at the disc but must have missed the crack since she took it with no questions. The coupon she gave me look much more professional than the photo copy on orange paper I got from the other store (photo copy one even shows the sale date from this sale AND the sales dates from the last time this promo ran).

I looked through the blu isle and just didn't find anything in the price range that I really felt I needed to get right now so held onto the coupon to see what else goes on sale. I was tempted by National Treasure 2 but $9.99 still seems a little high on that one. I may just wait for it to go on sale for lower. Since it is on sale till the 28th, I should still be able to get it later if I decide.

This week's ad states

toward "a" Blu-ray movie $9.99 and up. For a list of qualifying titles, see a Customer Service Specialist or visit BestBuy.com/upgradeandsave.

Notice the word "a" and not "any" as it had last week.. I sure hope they don't limit the selection this week..

The fine print on page 12 does still include the word "any" so if anyone has issues.. just use the fine print.. as I am sure some Customer Service Specialists may only read the bigger letters on pages 12, 13, and 14...

Picked up Stripes and Kick Ass for 4.99 each. Stripes rang up for 9.75 but it was marked 9.99 on the shelf so they fixed it.

The problem is, the Upgrade & Save coupon they give you clearly states, "Markdown taken from original price". They've got you there, and I think the success many of us had last week on the $9.99 titles was attributable to the in-store confusion rampant at the start of these sales.

IMHO, $5 off BB list price is no deal at all. You could easily beat that at Amazon, et al. on most days, and save yourself the hassle of schlepping to the store with your old DVDs, and dealing with BBCS.

Instead of making this an easy, friendly concept to get people in stores and buy some Blu-rays, they have to be dicks about it and try and enforce some Borders-like policy of using "original price" as the baseline. The coupons should be worth $5 off any Blu-ray, whatever the price is on that day. If you want a sale title, that's the price. If you want a full-priced title, knock yourself out.

Yep. Even from BB's own website that features the "upgrade list", most titles are $14.99+, and I can find most of those titles at Amazon for $9.99 already. I think there were 4 titles which were $9.99 on BB's website for the upgrade eligibility list.

Well, if the rules did change, hopefully the employees don't know about it. At my store, they said any register could help me, so perhaps the cashiers won't know...

True. I've traded in eight DVDs thus far, and six of the eight BDs I bought in exchange were at sale prices on top of the $5 deduction. That made it worthwhile for me. I've been doing a lot of homework connected to this promo, and for many titles, the $5 off is not worth it as even with the discount the prices still far exceed other retailers, amazon especially. There have been some worthwhile titles on the $9.99 list, but most of them that interest me I own already.

I have another two or three DVDs I'd like to dump at BB, since I won't get anywhere near $5 for them through other channels, but may have difficulty finding anything interesting to buy. There are more DVDs I'd upgrade to the BD version, but they're mostly catalog titles and come up on BB's web site as online-only or "order in store" titles. (I've checked for a few in store anyway, to no avail).

I think you guys are spazzing out for nothing. I have never had BB deny a coupon because (these or the 10% off you get in the mail) for an item being on sale. I have purchased on-sale items numerous times with those 10% off coupons you get in the mail, and they've never jacked the prices up to their "normal" price.

Until it becomes a widespread thing, I think you guys are barking up a tree that just isn't there.

A csr did this for me yesterday as well and after coupon I was only charged 4.75 plus tax. I've already watched the movie and the doc!

Then how do you explain their print ad showing titles listed at a sale price of 9.99, and then "4.99 with coupon"? I've been to 3 different stores in my area, bought some titles that were on sale and some that weren't, and I haven't had one hassle.

I still can't believe some of these posts with all the problems people are having. Maybe the bottom line affects these store manager's bonus checks.

And as far as the wording in this weeks ad: went in this morning and they still have the big sign out front as well as in the video department saying "any" blu-ray. Did another trade with no hassle.

I don't explain it, it's a conundrum. All I can tell you is what the ink on the coupons says, and what one manager told me in no uncertain terms.

My experience at the registers was quite different, where their POS applied the $5 discount to all titles marked $9.99 and above. I hope it continues. I also hope they eventually get their act together and stop putting out information that conflicts from flyer to coupon to manager to register.

Remember, this is Best Buy. Under the big yellow sign outside, they should put, "As always, YMMV".

Thanks. I was at Iwilei on Sunday. Either they didn't have them out yet, or I missed them.

Here's their coupon policy:

http://walmartstores.com/7655.aspx

According to that, they will only accept competitor's coupons for "A specific item for a specified price". Sounds like that would exclude this coupon, assuming your Walmart is following policy.

They did it for me no problem. Got the Moneyball 3 disc exclusive for 15 bucks.

BuckNaked2k is correct. Just because some stores are not giving any problems, does not mean all are running without incident. I'd say there are probably less problems now than there were a week ago when this started, but some stores/employees are still requiring some talking to in order to get the deal.

I went on the first day of the promo and although I had no troubles with getting the discount on sale items, I did get a CSR telling me, "Some of your titles do not qualify for this deal. Here is the list of titles you can pick from." I had to whip out the newspaper ad and point to the discount coupon itself, both of which said "any BD $9.99 and up." (This is when the web site still had the incorrect/outdated lists on it from previous promotions).

Best Buy can be an adventure! This is why I generally avoid them except when they have a good deal like this going on.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

Went to a local BB (Compton Store for those in LA area) and traded in 3 DVDs just to test the waters. While my movies were legit, they didnt scan them. I'm quite sure if someone wanted to pull the dispy-doo with some promo discs or whatnot, you can there.

Between that store and the Lakewood location, picked up:

American Beauty - $4.99
American History X - $4.99
Thelma & Louise - $4.99

I think I'm going to take 10 DVDs up there tomorrow. Hopefully, I use all 10 coupons.

I wonder why it it matters what the disc is.

Since they are slapping a huge recycle sticker on these I'm guessing these are just being dumped into a recycle program.

A few have taken each disc off the spindle and looked at the surface -- ?? is they looking for damage or to see if they aren't DVD-R.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

I'm trading in lots of HD-DVD discs and Region 2 DVD's (in several instances the CSRs didn't even bother to see if there was a disc in the case) so the intent is not to resell these discs like they do with their video game trade-ins.

I'm sure that BB is making a profit off the sale despite being to sell discs as low as $4.99 otherwise they would have clamped down on the questionable trade-ins long ago. They would have put signs in the front windows which read something like: "Due to printing error in this week's circular only selected Blu ray titles can be bought using the $5 Trade Up and Save Coupon. See a sales associate for further information. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Someone at blu-ray.com tried to trade in the dvd for Borat and they wouldn't take it saying "They don't accept burned copies"

For anyone who doesn't know, this is what the actual retail DVD looks like
