Re: International Blu-ray deals

I'm waiting for an MOC sale. I really want the Pabst "2 fer"; & even at the current price it's cheaper than buying the 2 Criterions separately.

Does anyone know if the MOC Asphalt is a newer restoration or a superior print than the Kino? Beaver has a review of the MOC, but I couldn't find anything on the Kino.

Re: International Blu-ray deals

While my Oppo will play all regions (with a hardware hack), now that Oppo is going under & I can't afford a 205 at the moment (& likely won't be able to afford a 205 in August either), I need to start being conscious of that issue, as my 6 year old 95 won't last forever.

Re: International Blu-ray deals

Arrow doesn't quite cater to my niche and just about everything I might want to buy (the Woody Allen and Marx Brothers sets are tempting, but not high on my list) is long past the "limited booklet" stage, which means buying used assuming I buy at all.

Thanks for the heads-up about Oppo. It's a great shame, but a sign of the times...

I purchased a region free Sony Bluray player from this merchant and its been going strong for 4 years. Of course, any firmware upgrade to the model was not recommended by the merchant but so far, there's not been any title that it has not played back. Just letting you know that there's plenty more options to the Oppo

Re: International Blu-ray deals

True, with the region free issue. My understanding is there's nothing out there that can be made region free with a comparable picture quality? Especially on upsampling dvd's? I also use the Oppo as a hi-res audio player. I don't know of any video player that does audio anywhere near as well (though their certainly is gear I'm not aware of).

Re: International Blu-ray deals

Cambridge basically offers a rebadged Oppo 203/205 more focused on audio. So that is always an option if you can't swing an Oppo right now.

The Oppo news came out of nowhere. I really wish they had stuck it out one more year but waning physical media sales looks to have forced their parent company's hand.

I had the impression that they thought they had a year's worth of stock to move; hence the July-August planned run of new stock when they sold out in 2 days!

Do you happen to know what the model # is on the Cambridge 205 equivalent?

Careful, some on that list are not correct. I don’t believe Spider Baby is region free and neither are current pressings of Sisters. Always best to triple check region from multiple sources if you are region locked.

The 205's inventory is already sold out, you can sign up for a notification from Oppo if they do another run. Supposedly if there is enough demand a small run of machines will be available in July/August.

Prices on the secondary market are already jacked up.

I'm not well versed on the Cambridge unit other than it shares some of the Oppo components with a few different internals.

Re: International Blu-ray deals

Waning physical media sales is a rather piss-poor excuse coming from Oppo.

Also, the jury is certainly not out when it comes to physical media...especially audio media.

I remember reading this article last year:

Notice how it carefully slices the demographic, limiting it to 18-24 year-olds. It's a UK article, where physical media isn't run so much by the major studios as it is here in the United States. Hollywood has accomplished their long-term mission converting the consumer market's preference from physical goods to digital content. They have been far less effective outside the United States with this strategy. You'll start seeing more and more of this type of coverage in foreign markets.

I believe Oppo saw the writing on the wall for UHD's potential - it's likely never going to be a mainstream consumer format reaching BD's market penetration. It will be larger than laserdisc but companies don't get excited by a format with limited potential. The swift decline in brick&mortar retail support for physical media has put a severe crimp in any future path.

Worth noting (possibly) that this title was that price back in December before dropping to £7.00 near the end of the month and staying there well into January. Can't say there's a pattern to these things, obviously, but it might be worth holding a copy in your cart to see if it drops again.

Thanks! Picked up Marvel's Agent Carter - Seasons 1 & 2, since it's the only title not available in the States.

Not entirely true. Season 1 was an Amazon exclusive (though now out of print). Season 2 didn't come here though.

Re: International Blu-ray deals

Zavvi kept changing the currency to $ instead of £ . I had to manually change it to say I was shipping to the UK for it to stay in £ even though the shipping address is in US. I assume based on Amazon that I would do better having the bank convert the price instead of the retailer thou I didn't check rates which may vary by the time the order ships.
