Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
For those who might be in the area, Toronto's legendary Queen Video is closing their last location, on Bloor in the Annex.
I popped in yesterday and the shelves were still well-stocked but the selection was nowhere near as deep as what they had at the flagship Queen Street location when they closed it two years ago. THAT place was a goldmine, and I'm glad I was able to spend several visits there stocking up (and Suspect Video, too). Most of the library at this location is of a more recent vintage, though they do have some obscurities tucked here and there. DVDs outnumbered Blu by a fair margin; not sure if that's because the Blus had already been picked over or because this shop generally had more DVDs all along. Pricing to start was too steep -- $8.00 for family films, comedies and docs, $10 for horror + sci-fi, and $13.50 (!) for recent releases, classics, foreign, etc. -- but the registers were constantly ringing. No purchases for me, though; I might go back in a few weeks to rummage what's left once the prices get a lot more realistic, but I really didn't see much that I wanted anyway. Still, might be worth a peek if you happen to be in the neighborhood, just for old times' sake, or because there's lots of good eatin' nearby :) : <iframe src="https://globalnews.ca/video/embed/5087082/" width="670" height="372" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen scrolling="no"></iframe> |
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Here's a 'your mileage' deal for Canadians only:
Some Walmarts here seem to have the 4K/Blu-Ray combo of John Carpenter's CHRISTINE mis-labeled at $5.00, both on the rack tag and via a price sticker on the slipcover. Noticed this at two locations last night and ended up buying one even though I have no interest in 4K! When you check out, the disc will (probably) ring up at $15.00, but pointing to the sticker will make the cashier override for the lower price. Again, not sure if this is at all stores, but could be worth a look for those interested in this title. |
Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
As always, not sure how many Canadians here will see this, but Walmart Canadan currently has TRUE LIES, ALIENS and THE ABYSS 4K combos reduced to $20 a pop (about $15 U.S.). I’m sure everyone knows what they’re getting into with these, quality-wise, and they also have the awful bilingual packaging that plagues so many releases in this country, but at the moment that’s about the cheapest these have gotten so far.

Re: Canadian Blu-ray Bargains
Another rare post in this thread, but a fairly spectacular sale started at Unobstructed View on Boxing Day, running until Jan 1.
https://unobstructedview.com/boxing-..._list_limit=36 As someone who orders a lot of stuff from American boutiques shipped to my U.S. addresses, I rarely bite at UV’s sales as they usually can’t compare, but this is one of their better ones. Sadly, a lot of the higher end stuff, like 4Ks and box sets, went into ‘backorder’ pretty quick and are displaying at their usual high prices, but there is still a ton of boutique-y Blus and DVDs that might justify an order if you’re looking to simply see some movies you’ve been curious about without breaking the bank. They do have a free shipping threshold (can’t remember how high) but they also have a sneaky trick of having ‘fixed’ shipping fees on box sets no matter how much you spend, so adding those generally only makes sense if the order is larger. Some of the best deals here are the Kino KL Studio Classics for $3 (DVD) and $5.10 (Blu) – I’m kinda pissed at how much more I paid for many of them in Kino’s actual U.S. sales – but plenty of other smaller/arthouse labels are mixed into that price range as well. My order in CDN dollars (which admittedly includes a lot of DVDs for resale), spoiled because of the clunky way they display order details: Spoiler:
