The Ben-Hur UCE is $28.99 as the DOTD ($22.49 for DVD).

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on LOTR EE since I skipped it during the holidays but I forgot about it. I'm sure it'll be on sale again...

Yes, it's the DVD. Considering it was shot in the late 80's, Pan and Scan, I don't think they could release it on BD and make it look good.

I only mentioned it here because there isn't an Amazon bargains thread in DVD and this thread gets a little more traffic.

It was not all that bad. I seen it in 2D but it does look like they shot it in 3D. If the price goes under $20 for the 3D its a buyer.

If you would have asked me last year about 3D I would have said pass. The setup I have at home rocks. I only buy them if the are Real3D movies. What I heard is this is one of them. Yes I will buy it (TRON 2 still rocks in 3D)

Is "Real3D" a 3D process that I haven't heard about before, or do you mean movies that were filmed in 3D rather than post-processed?

I remember looking for such a list on Google and found some info, but the lists weren't complete or kept up to date. Though I prefer filmed in 3D, I'm pretty sure I've seen some decent post-processed 3D movies. Someday (in my never-ending list of things I want to do) I'd like to read how they do this 3D post-processing without a human manually selecting objects and assigning a depth for each.

There's "Real D 3D", but that's a projection technology, and has no bearing on how the movie was filmed. I'm guessing "Real3D" was just a reference to movies filmed in 3D.

This site has a list of "real" vs. "fake" 3D movies:

It also references this article, which has a basic overview on how the post-production 3D conversions are done:

All I know about it is, if they shot it in 3D it rocks (Tron, Cap) but if they take a 2D movie and turn it into a 3D (Conan, Driving Angy) it's sucks. Anything done by Disney rocks (Loin King). I just look for the Real3D on the back of the box or the listing. I have yet to see a Imax 3D at home yet so.

I don't see a "Real3D" logo on the back of the Blu-ray boxes. There is a "Blu-ray 3D" logo though on the back of Tron and Lion King:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Li...Blu-ray/19470/
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/TRON-L...Blu-ray/19153/

Conan and Drive Angry have the same logo on their boxes though:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Conan-...Blu-ray/31139/
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Drive-...Blu-ray/21847/

BTW, Drive Angry was shot in 3D, so it's "Real3D", and if "Cap" was in reference to Captain America, that film was made 3D via post-production conversion, and thus is "fake" 3D:
http://realorfake3d.com/

Still has the Blu-ray 3D logo though (which, like RealD 3D, refers to the presentation technology, not the filming/processing technique):

Did not know that. Last summer the movie Gods gave me many free tickets. I used some to watch the movie in 3D and 2D. I found that the ones that had Read3D to be really good.

Last week I bought a 3D setup and started to watch my 3D movies. Driving Angry thinking about it I can see it was made to be 3D as the guns, and other items would come at you. Captain America (both at home and theater) was nice. Transformers will be here Tuesday.

Again I am still new to them, I am sure there is going to be good and bad. But one thing I have found out Smurfs, Loin King, and Cars 2 was very well done. Tron, was 2D and 3D again I thought well done.

Yeah, this was likely RealD 3D, a projection technology.

There are several different projection technologies for showing 3D in theaters, and some debate over which is the "best." RealD typically gets high marks though.

For home viewing, the majority of 3D Blu-rays now use the "Blu-ray 3D" standard for use on compatible players and HDTVs. Considering you liked Captain America's 3D, you should be less concerned whether the 3D is "real" or "fake," and instead focus on whether it's good or bad by checking reviews and such.

It's good that you liked it, but Captain America was a convert. Drive Angry was filmed in 3D.

And Drive Angry is typically cited as one of the better 3D Blu-rays (in terms of the use of 3D, not the quality of the actual film).

Some of the confusion in regards to the RealD might be because of the My Bloody Valentine remake. To differentiate between the regular My Bloody Valentine release and the 3D Blu-ray release of My Bloody Valentine (you know, because they just have to include 3D in the title of both versions to ensure confusion), many online retailers show the 3D Blu-ray as "Real D 3D." Of course, I find it funny that I can't even find the RealD logo on my copy of My Bloody Valentine ...

To be fair, both releases had 3D versions of the movie on them. The original Blu-ray released used anaglyph 3D (red/blue glasses) since the "Blu-ray 3D" standard hadn't been released yet.

Agreed. I loved it (both the 3D effects, and the movie itself). Saw it in the theater, and instantly bought the BD (which can be had for cheaper than most 3D BD's)

I realize that. I own both versions, but that doesn't change the fact that it's very confusing for consumers. You will find the regular Blu-ray listed as My Bloody Valentine 3D Blu-ray when it's not really a 3D Blu-ray. It's setting people up to get the wrong version, something that could be simplified if the title of the movie didn't include 3D. Calling the 3D Blu-ray version Real D 3D only muddies the water more for regular 3D Blu-ray releases. I just think there should be a better way to label titles like this without confusing people, unless that's part of what they're hoping for.

It is a 3D Blu-ray, but it's not a "Blu-ray 3D" Blu-ray. Such confusion is inevitable for 3D home video releases that predated the "Blu-ray 3D" standard.

It not only muddies the waters, it's outright wrong. RealD 3D is a theatrical projection method, and has no bearing on any Blu-ray release. The appropriate description is "Blu-ray 3D", which is the logo on the packaging and the description Amazon uses:
http://www.amazon.com/My-Bloody-Vale...dp/B004634VFM/

The original release doesn't have the "Blu-ray 3D" logo or designation:

I feel like we are just repeating each other. As I said, I understand the difference between versions. I never said the old release had the logo. Like I said, I own both versions. It doesn't change the fact that the way many places are advertising these discs is confusing and inconsistent. Getting into the semantics of 3D Blu-ray versus Blu-ray 3D, while maybe technically correct, is probably roughly the equivalent of telling the average consumer they are using a tissue and not a Kleenex. It doesn't help matters that sites like Blu-ray.com don't say, "Here's the review for Hugo Blu-ray 3D." They list "Hugo 3D Blu-ray review." Yes, the description also has 3D Blu-ray in it, but what I'm trying to say is 3D Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D seem to get used pretty interchangeably. It's confusing.

That's swell that Amazon more clearly labels it, but that doesn't mean that's how all stores have it. Look at how Buy.com shows the two versions: http://www.buy.com/sr/searchresults....me&display=col

Buy.com isn't the only one who labels the movies in a similar way. I realize the RealD label on a Blu-ray is incorrect. That's why I brought it up as a possible source of confusion for the person who mentioned looking for that logo on his movies. Also, I realize this is more of a problem for the older discs, but then retailers should adapt and find a way to more clearly label products to eliminate confusion, especially online where people can't pick up the product and look at it. Do I know to look for the logo? Yes, that doesn't mean people who don't know more the format will know. I could see where many people would pick up the wrong version of My Bloody Valentine.

Too late! I got mine (unfortunately the one that includes the worthless anaglyph 3D version) from a Hollywood Video closing as a blind buy, but at least it was really cheap.
