Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Got shot down trying to use the $8 off coupon on the Three Colors set this morning.
This was the same cashier who let me use a bunch of coupons on the first day of the sale- but he said "the selling price isn't the same as the list price, and it's under $40". I didn't bother pressing the point, because he was very cool about me using a bunch of coupons the first day of the sale, and took the time then to make sure all the different ones went through. Plus I still had an Am Ex one with me just in case, and that went through no problem.
Not as good a deal, by $.80- but still quite happy to score an $80 set for $30 including tax.

And that's gonna do it for me. 8 titles, including a couple expensive boxsets, for $140 (pre tax).
And for once, I actually spent less than I'd budgeted for, and didn't over-indulge.

Maybe it's because of that last point, that this seems like one of the more satisfying Criterion sales for me -despite the discounts not being nearly as great.

Oh- and I'll second Blow Out. Great movie- one of DePalma and Travolta's most entertaining. Great transfer on it too, which just slays the old DVD.

Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Went to my local store Sunday and picked up Four Feathers, Island of Lost Souls, The Killing, and a book. Used the 20% off AMEX plus the 5 off 50 members coupon.

Tried reserving Three Colors online early this morning, but most of the stores didn't even show stock on it. Later, my local store indicated they did not have it, but I got lucky with another store a bit farther away. Have it on hold and will hopefully pick it up after work with another AMEX coupon and member discount.

Successful with the $8-off-Blu coupon on Three Colors, but only after I pointed to the fine print. So, denial, then, "Oh! You're right! What a deal!" Got it for $27.99 (plus tax) out the door.

That box is one of my best purchases from the past year. I'm probably in the minority, but my favorite movie of the set is A Safe Place. Really terrific, unsung movie with Jack Nicholson, Orson Welles and Tuesday Weld.

Each was $14.40+tax. Total came out to about $30.

I still have 4 titles left I want to buy including the big box set America Lost and Found which is $62 after the 50% off discount. Does anyone else own this too? If so, any opinions on it? I think its a great deal and the fact that Easy Rider is included is really the main reason I want to buy this.
The Last Picture Show is far superior to Easy Rider. That was my main reason for buying it.

Earlier today picked up 3 Colors box and Fanny and Alexander. The clerk allowed me to do a ship to home on 12 Angry Men and Rushmore even though they won't be out for a week. Manually adjusted price to reflect the 50 percent off for the sale. Woohoo. Try your luck.

Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Ah, crap.

None of my local B&N had Videodrome, so I scheduled a pickup at one a short drive from my work. I drove out there during lunch, having just enough time to get there and back.

I bought it and left. About halfway back, I realized I hadn't checked it to make sure it was the blu-ray. It was in my trunk and checked when I got back to work. It wasn't. Damn, now I have to go back to exchange it.

Had to stop by one more time and use the 15% coupon. Got Naked (the movie, not literally).

Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Finally found a copy of Three Colors Trilogy using the $8 off coupon. Took 2 cashiers and their manager to look at it, but the manager accepted it. Said it was kind of silly to put that restriction of 1 item over $40 when most of the stuff around that price is always $39.99. God bless her for having a dash of compassion and intellect. And that wraps up this round. Time to enjoy this haul until next July.

Scored "High and Low" for $10.88. Only 3 left to buy and 2 30% coupons left (if I can't get them for $8 off). The (temporary) end is within sight!!

Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Picked up three more yesterday.

Identification of a Woman $10.80
Rules of the Game $14.71
Three Colors $27.99

There was also an elementary school book fair going on while I was there. They had the kids going around doing a scavenger hunt and one of the items was "Write down the name of a movie in the promotional display." A kid walked over and picked up Salo to show his mom to write down for him. Yeah...I think she had a nice talk with the manager after that.

They were unique, one time use codes sent to certain people.

Re: B&N 50% Criterion sale on blu-rays now live!

Anyone know if Criterion will be re-releasing digipak blu-rays like Last Year at Marienbad and El Norte in plastic cases? I know cases can be purchased for $5 now, but obviously I'd like to save money if possible.

I've held off buying these titles because of the cases, but now that rumors are spreading of no coupon use in future sales, I might just cave in and get them.
