Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12
Well I was shot down trying to use the $8 off $40 coupon. I was told I couldn't use it because the selling price came up as $20 on the register. I tried to argue the price before discount, but the cashier wouldn't budge. I was able to use the $5 off $50 coupon though. I walked out having paid $71.20 for four Criterions. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. The cashier had all my movies behind the register (I had reserved them) in the movies department.
Not an amazing deal, but still not bad nonetheless.
Now watch a 20% in-store coupon get released tomorrow.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12
The wording on these coupons leaves a lot to be desired. This is my first sale as a member, but I've semi-followed the discussions on the old $5 off $20 or whatever it was, and this $8 off 40 coupon seems to have similar, annoying wording.
If they really want to make things clear, they should say something on the coupon like, "Valid on all items whose list price is $40 or higher. Sale-priced items excluded" if they want to deny people. Or, conversely, "Sale-priced items included." I'm a big fan of explicit, no-doubts wording.
On another note, I'm pleasantly surprised they're actually allowing some online coupons this time.

No, the membership discount will still work in store, but DVDs/Blus priced that high typically have a "Save an Additional 10% on top of your member discount" sticker on them. This is negated due to the 50% discount.

Is this something newly implemented by B&N? I purchased several titles in-store during each of the past three sales and every title always had the 10% member discount in addition to the 50% off sale.

But during this sale (or any other like the b2g1) that 10% is nullified...however, you ALWAYS get your member 10% discount. Ergo, all blus are $18.00 in store for members, lower priced items are $13.50, etc.
All that said, I used the $8 off coupon on the Matarazzo Eclipse set and the cashier didn't blink. It was $60 - $30 (50%) - $3 (10% member) - $8 = $19 + tax Will let you all know if it works with the Night of the Hunter set since my pops wants me to pick it up for him along with some other things since he has no b&m within 150 miles of him.

Got my shopping done. Used the member discount in store, plus both coupons (5 off 50, 8 off 40) and ended up with the following Blus for a total of $127.
Kes
The Last Emporer
Seven Samurai
Yi Yi
Kagemusha
Thin Red Line
Solaris

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12
Went to a couple different stores, made four purchases, had no problem passing the 5 off 50 every time but wasn't able to get the $8 coupon to work. It's a huge YMMV. The two clerks that passed it were both new workers, btw.
8 dollar coupon did not work on Raffaello or Che (the girl was very insistent that it had to be the register price, not the price before the 50% discount), did work on Paul Robeson, and worked on Brakhage bluray. The clerk had to make it work for Brakhage, I think because the Member discount pushes it below 40, but it just scanned and applied no problem with Paul Robeson.
My guess is that the 79.99 titles will tend to have good results passing the coupon, because those titles scan at $40 at the register (notably, those same titles are 39.99 online, and the coupon won't apply to them), but won't be assured, depending on the clerk. Below 79.99 is pretty YMMV, the coupon won't scan as valid, so you have to talk the clerk into it, or they have to voluntarily type it in. It didn't work for $50 and $60 msrp titles for me. the $100 and $125 titles shouldn't have any problem with passing the coupon, it should work fine both online and in store (note that with the $125 titles, the coupons will show up online as $13 off when you input the coupon code).
The only title I didn't see in stores was Kes.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12
Had a really great experience today. It pays to be friendly with the clerks and strike up a conversation before busting out the coupons. Not only did the clerk apply the "$5 of $50" to the order, he went the extra mile and managed to apply the "$8 off $40" on one of the $39.99 (pre-sales price) titles. All in all, after two separate transactions using both sets of currently available B&N coupons, I was able to get 8 Criterions for approx. $15 each (tax included). Not bad!

A question: there are two 5 off 50 coupons currently listed, each with a different expiration date. Are you using the same one each time or changing up the coupons at different stores?
I would think, at the very least, that there should be no problem using both of the 5 off 50's, on separate purchases.
