Well if it follows the pricing trend of the Matrix box set and the Batman one it will hit the sub $40-$30 mark in 2-3 years.

You should check out some of the reviews at bluray.com, hometheaterforum and avsforum. There seems to be an agreement among reviewers that there is a color timing issue that has some scenes in a green/cyan tint (think the first Matix). Robert Harris (film historian) has taken a second look and agrees there seems to be a problem with the discs he received from WB and one assumes those discs that will be in-store on 6/28

How does DVD Planet stack up? Anybody had any problems with them? I wanna hold off to see if Amazon price matches first.

I'm kind of worried more people won't realize he's being sarcastic and will actually cancel their preorders. Just to clarify for DVDtalkers, his belief on the new LOTR set is:

"So far I'm very pleased... Detail is superb, recognizing the fact that we're dealing with 2k. I'm seeing no problems whatsoever. A beautiful and satisfying image."

I see he added the disclaimer to his post at HTF. That being said, I think it will be a situation as to whether ppl will find the new color timing distracting or not. I personally have not seen the Blu Ray yet, so I am reserving judgement.

I am gonna hold off for a sweet spot of $40-$50 here. I will revisit them with ext dvd's for now.

I pre-ordered it from WB back in March for about the same price ($63.71 free first-class shipping). I won't cancel it at this point, but I agree with those holding off. The way blu-rays get discounted these days, I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the $40 range pre-Christmas.

I got it from WB in March for about $51, after that $20 off $100 coupon and a FW refund (which they already gave me despite the item not shipping). The only downside was I had to buy two, but considering my whole family loves this series I don't doubt I'll have someone to give the extra away to for a nice present.
