^I haven't kept up with it: what was the problem with the current release?

I saw Patton in the theater in 1970 and can't recall seeing it since — never picked it up on DVD. I remember the movie more for the controversy about George C. Scott and his refusal to accept the Oscar than anything else.

The current blu has been said to have been DNR'ed to death. The sample pictures over at blu-ray.com are beautiful and I can't compare them to what was on the screen in 1970 but they do look far too 'new' to be similar. It's just the preference of the buyer to what they care for in terms of picture quality:

I, however, did not know that they were correcting it. That'll be interesting to see.

^Patton was shot in 65 mm so I would expect it to look quite good if the negative was still in good shape. But DNR has certainly been the bane of a number of movie transfers.

I was just curious because the 2008 review here by DVD Savant didn't mention any problems:

The Longest Day also has DNR issues, as the DVD Beaver screencaps (and the review at High-Def Digest) demonstrate.

^In some ways Patton really seems to stand out, but in other ways it looks artificial. Certainly the colors pop and it's very free of any noise, grain, etc. But even my wife, who doesn't follow any of this online stuff about the transfers, recognized that something just didn't look right. But I can understand why some think it's great and others that go in knowing the issues have a much different perspective.

The Longest Day also has some DNR issues, particularly in a bar scene and another in a hangar. But if you're at all familiar with the DVDs, there is about a huge improvement overall. The DVDs of TLD had so many issues between them that I'm probably more forgiving of it on BD than I am of Patton.

That Best Buy coupon is sorely tempting me (although I own Incredibles already).

Problem is I'm sitting on a bunch of amazon gift certificates, so it's tough to justify spending cash right now. If amazon works out within $3-4 of Best Buy's price after coupon, I'll spend $3-4 of someone else's dimes and conserve the moolah I got for Father's Day for something else (like a possible B&N Criterion sale. That's what I'm hoping to blow that on).
