I do have to thank you for the Amazon Kindle GC idea. Last night I converted $200 of BB gift cards to Amazon GC's. I wish I had known this in December, when I spent nearly $1000 at Amazon. I still have around $300 in BB cards to use, but I won't convert everything yet. I'm sure I'll still buy some things at BB, but with Amazon price matching almost everything each week, it's just so convenient to order and have it shipped to me, saving on time, gas, and tax!

Whenever I get a gift card my family likes to tell me they don't need to shop for the best price because I have a gift card and it'll still be cheaper after I use it. I hope after repeatedly explaining it (and opportunity cost) that maybe they finally understand it. I always tell people the rule is you should NEVER factor a gift card or store reward/credit into your buying decision. You look at the GC/reward/credit as being cash and only buy the item if you would buy it without the GC/reward/credit.
I agree with you 95%. I do think it is appropriate to discount the value of some gift cards though, because unlike cash, gift cards do carry some risk. For example, I had some gift cards to Virgin MegaStore, a European chain of CD/DVD stores that had branches in major U.S. cities. When Virgin closed their U.S. stores around 2007, I was working around the clock and didn't have time to visit the store to use up the gift cards, so I lost around $100. So if there's a risk that the store will go out of business, or that a gift card will expire (in some states you also incur charges after a period of non-use), then I think it's appropriate to say that the gift card is objectively worth only some percentage of its face value.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

When I got my Amazon Kindle GCs at BB a couple days ago, I noticed there were very few left of either denomination. With more of us finding out about this (and it being discussed more on SD), I'm afraid these are going to become scarce. I just hope BB doesn't stop carrying them as it solves my problem of having to deal with BB if I ever get more GCs or store credit again. I've already used most of my Kindle GCs at Amazon.

Out of curiosity, do any other retail B&M stores carry Amazon GCs? It probably doesn't matter because I've never had trouble using GCs at Walmart (i.e. food) or Target (i.e. Disney BDs with coupons). The only other GCs I occasionally get as gifts are for Staples or Sears/Kmart. Those are tougher to use, but I can usually find some stuff there eventually. Too bad everyone doesn't sell Amazon GCs who has become my primary electronics and movies source (as long as they continue to have competitive prices).

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

^^I think the more likely scenario would be that they stop allowing you to use your BBY GC for an AMZN GC. I was surprised that they even allowed this in the first place and figured it was just an oversight. Every other store I know of does not allow you to use a store credit to purchase other gift cards. I would love it if Staples would let me use all my ink rewards credit to get AMZN GCs, but alas, they dont.

Thanks for being off topic! I had been wanting Zodiac from Amazon, but the Columbia House price was good for me, and the coupon with it. Ended up with Zodiac blu and Criterion Ruling Class and 8 1/2 dvd for $20! I rarely ever check the CH forums, so this was a great deal to hear about!

Ok....back on topic of Amazon...

I can't take credit for it, Ken. It was posted earlier in this thread and that's where I got the idea. Glad it worked out for you!

However, I do agree that I used the wrong terminology in saying TOTAL COST when what I meant to say was OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. Mea culpa.

I also sincerely do agree with most of the responses to my error. The problem with me is that whenever I have a credit that is about to expire, I tend to rush things. However, in this case, DUH!, it's the Best Buy credit that is about to expire, not the Amazon Kindle gift card that I am buying with my BB credit. As such, it really doesn't mean I have to rush to buy KONG and can wait for it to come down at Amazon, if it ever does.

Next time use blocks in your explanations and I will get it faster.

I certianly didnt intend my posts as ribbing. If they came across as such, I apologize to ProfessorEcho. I was simply venting my frustration at alot of deal posts in general that always seem to start with "Get this DVD for $5" and seem to contain many hoops that you have to jump through, and cash you have to spend, to get this "deal", such as buying coupons on ebay, signing up for magazine subscriptions, buy only on the second wedensday of a month, give up your first born, etc.
I am glad you will be able to get your copy of King Kong for only $6 out of pocket.

Back to Amazon, I am waiting for several season sets to come down from the high 20s to the high teens. Stuff like Supernatural, Smallville, Human Target, Big Bang Theory, etc. I can wait.

No, I was not offended at all, JJCool. Life is too short to take it so seriously.

Do I understand it correctly? I can use a BB gift card to buy an Amazon Kindle card and then use the Kindle card for anything on Amazon? I wish I had known that.

Yes. That is correct. It seems too good to be true, so I don't expect it to last long. Either BB will stop selling Amazon GCs by the next time I need it or as John Galt predicted BB will stop allowing you to use GCs/store credit to buy them.

The more interesting question as more people are now discovering this (like I just did) is: how long have these Kindle GCs been available at BB? If it has been months or years, then maybe there's hope it will last. If it's recent, then probably not. If these GCs have been at BB for years, it's hard to believe we're only now hearing about them.

BTW, Office Max allows you to use Rewards to buy gift cards. Other than that and BB's Amazon GCs, I'm not aware of any other stores that do this. If there are, someone please post.

I mentioned it earlier, but the answer would be yes. I'm not sure if you can use RZ certificates to pay for the entire Amazon GC, but I was able to redeem a $5 RZ and $45 in BB gift cards to purchase a $50 Amazon GC.
