The subtitles aren't nearly as bad as they are made out to be. It seems to be a new translation from Mandarin, as opposed to just using the dialog from the screenplay. I'd rather they had kept the theatrical subs but the difference isn't that much. And it doesn't seem as if we will get a chance for a different release.

One nice thing about this USA BD release is that it defaults to Mandarin with English subs. My UK version defaults to the dubbed English track, which is a travesty.

For $8? If you like the movie, get it.

I don't own either, but it looks like the only difference is an extra commentary with the cinematographer on the US version. And the UK is region free.

Check out dvdcompare for the differences and this site for the region coding info.

Regarding Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, thanks for talking about the subtitles as they had concerned me due to various reviews ripping the subtitles as being horrible translations compared to the DVD. It probably won't matter too much because I'll watch the English dub on the BD because I hate reading subtitles unless I have no choice. It has been $7.99 for a month or two, I believe.

Thanks, lizard! Big list... I'm tempted on Catch and Release/It Could Happen to You, but ICHTY has poor reviews and no extras. Still, for $7.50 I might bite...

I rented this with the intention of buying it at some point but was very disappointed in the PQ. I'm sorry I got rid of the SD so soon

My 2 cents worth on The New World. I'm a very patient and tolerant movie watcher who has watched many a crappy movie and perservered to the end. It's very rare that I give up on any movie, but The New World is one of those rare movies where I got so bored I gave up well before half way through it and made a note to myself in my movies list never to try to watch it again. To think there's an extended cut of it... I need an emoticon of someone fainting.

Warner's DVD2BLU (especially with the "any" DVD promotion) was $6.95 for LA Confidential, I think. Of course you had to buy enough other movies to get free shipping.

My 2 cents worth on you. You need a better attention span and appreciation for fantastic cinema.

I don't want to insult anyone, but Manzana, you admit you'll sit and watch crappy movies, and you couldn't even sit still for 130 min or so to watch the theatrical release of The New World? Even if it was too slow-moving for your taste, at the very least you could enjoy the gorgeous cinematography. Have you seen any other Malick films? The New World isn't really the best film to start on with Malick, but if you watch Days of Heaven or The Thin Red Line, you can get a sense of what Malick wanted to accomplish with The New World.

I sat through The New World. The cinematography was great. The movie itself was boring as hell. The only movie I've ever stopped without finishing was Scary Movie, and it wasn't that bad. But I literally remember nothing about it.

It's way out of line to suggest that the reason that someone didn't like the film you liked was due to their intellectual capabilities being lower than yours. In fact, since you seem to be having trouble grasping that intelligent people might strongly differ about a film, perhaps you should be asking yourself why you struggle so much with the basics.

Also, it's a crime that Q'orianka Kilcher did not get an Oscar nomination - her performance is incredible in The New World. Just watching her grow and mature throughout the course of the film was enough to make me declare it one of the best movies of 2005.

I'm like you, I will sit thru a bad movie because on occasion, it picks up and then in the end all makes sense. And a lot of times, I like movies that most others think of as being "bad".

But I couldn't finish watching this either. I remember it being so slow that I had a hard time not getting distracted and wanting to do other things so I finally gave in and turned it off.

Too bad, I really wanted it to be good!

Just read the other responses: Yes it was visually appealing and maybe I'll give it another try one day but I can definitely relate to Manzana's reaction to it.

I'll try to keep this short so as not to sidetrack this thread further. I totally agree with your comments about good cinematography and boring as hell with The New World. I turned it off solely because I was bored beyond belief. When I stop other movies, it's usually because I'm offended... like when I turned off Scary Movie which I didn't know before renting that it was a sex gross-out movie. I still have some images I wish I could purge from my brain from that movie. I say I've watched a lot of crappy movies as I've made it through most of the Screams, Saws, Friday the 13ths, and various Farelly/Aptow type movies. I admit I'm weird that I can take extreme graphic violence and scariness without flinching but certain types of raunchiness make me cringe (a la There's Something About Mary and Me Myself & Irene). That's my problem of course. I made it through Franklyn which was so boring/blah I threw the disc away (cost me 50c @ HW Video going OOB). I don't remember anything about The Thin Red Line other than I watched it and marked it as OK/tolerable. Never saw Days of Heaven. I don't pick crappy movies on purpose but I run across enough of them. No matter what the movie is, if you read Amazon or IMDB reviews, you'll find a bunch of positives and a bunch of negatives. It's hard to know, but if I'm watching with someone else and that person gives up, I usually stick with it.

I watched all of The New World but it took me 3 or 4 sittings to get thru it. Watched it in bed with the wife and we kept falling asleep. I agree with Draven's take on the film.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Scary Movie was a MASTERPIECE compared to its various sequels... As for There's Something About Mary, LOVED IT! I guess it just shows that people can have very different taste in movies. What may be fantastic to some, can be terrible to others, and vice versa... The only movie I ever walked out of was Shooting Fish. It was a free preview, so I figured no money lost. Usually I stick it out. Although I came close to walking out of Be Kind, Rewind. Worst Jack Black movie EVER, and I consider myself a huge fan of his (and I've met him, and have a great picture taken with him)
Sorry, I know this thread got way OT, but I felt obliged to make some of my own comments... Now back to our regularly scheduled Amazon Deals...
