Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Some interesting deals in the Chase thing. Am tempted by Wolverine and the X-Men for 21.49, Batman Brave and the Bold 2.1 for 13.99, Schoolhouse Rock for 13.99, Stargate Atlantis BD for 114, all before discount. Even saw an MOD title on the list, Herculoids.

Uh oh, I better be careful. I saw Justice League Unlimited 2 on the list for 7.59, but I was suspicious and clicked through, and it was a third-party seller. The rules state that that's not eligible for the deal.

A little temped by the new True Blood but I still haven't finished the first season so I can probably wait.

Some nice prices on Chuck (previously discussed in this thread) using this discount.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Had some titles in the cart and noticed before checkout that it wasn't giving 20% on everything. Went back and saw one of the titles was third party.

Still lots of titles available. I'm going to try to place several orders if I can. Going to get some for me and some for the kids' birthdays/Christmas.

EDIT: Code can apparently used once per account. Placed two orders on two different accounts.

Not sure, but I used it for one I couldn't find on the list...so it might actually work for ANY TV Blu-ray title.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Anyone thinking about Battle of Britain for $4.99 or $6.49 should read the reviews first. They stripped all of the extras off the Collector's Edition, so it's just a barebones BD-25 with a moderate improvement in quality due to BD. It's a great candidate for the $5 BD titles at Walmart on BF, but even at $5 I don't know if I'd "upgrade" my DVD CE.

Regarding the Chase credit card discount and "eligible titles" people keep talking about, from what I gathered in a couple posts it's really for Amazon credit card holders only which just happens to be Chase. I got excited at first because I have a Chase VISA, but it's not an Amazon one... so no discount = no purchases for me. I was told it's bad (for your credit score) to have more than 2-3 credit cards, so every time every big store offers me one (which seems like it's weekly) I have to say no.

I don't think this is true. At least, having more than 3 credit cards, in and of itself, is not bad.

From:
http://www.mymoneyblog.com/can-havin...dit-score.html
Continuously opening new credit lines will hurt your credit score. At the same time, having a lot of old cards can “anchor” your average account age as well... I have over 20 credit cards (average is ~10 per consumer) and have seen no indication that having too many credit cards makes my score any lower... based on the evidence available I don’t believe that having too many cards by itself lowers one’s credit scores.
Both of these articles mention opening several new cards in a short period of time is bad, but don't mention simply having a large number of cards as being bad:
http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/10/pf/c...lers/index.htm
http://www.myfico.com/crediteducatio...yourscore.aspx

Finally, from:
http://www.experian.com/credit-educa...core-faqs.html
Does having too many credit cards affect a credit score?
Having too many credit cards with either high balances or large amounts of credit available can negatively impact risk scores, depending on the overall credit history.
So again it's not so much about the number of cards, but about the overall amount of debt or credit available.

^ Very true. There's a lot more that goes into it than just the number of cards you have. I just bought a car in May, so I had to run my credit report. The sales guy, manager and woman who handled the papers at the dealership all kept raving about my credit score. I handily qualified for the best financing. My dad was shocked and said he figured the dealership was just winding me up. Then he saw my credit score and was shocked that it was so good. That felt good. I have 5 credit cards by the way.

Yes, I also have five credit cards, three with credit limits of $17K to $25K, and I had a credit score of 800+ a couple of years ago when last I checked. I assume it is a couple of dozen points lower now because I used a 0%, no fee, balance transfer check recently for credit card arbitrage purposes, but the balance is tiny compared to the credit limit so maybe not.

It really isn't the number of cards, nor the credit limits, but how one uses the credit that impacts the credit score. Lots of credit inquiries, late or missed payments, high revolving balance relative to the card limit, and the like, will negatively impact one's credit score much more than having lots of cards with high limits. It is generally recommended that one doesn't close cards that aren't being used, because it lowers one's credit utilization rate (lower overall limit versus the current balance owed on all cards). Of course, if the card has an annual fee, it should be closed regardless of the temporary hit to the credit score. There are too many no-annual-fee cards around to put up with that stuff.

I should probably check on my FICO score because I have a Nissan Leaf on order and would like to take advantage of the dealer 2.29% financing. That's pretty much like "free money" when most of my investments are yielding far more. I believe that anything above 750 gets the best rates.

So, if one doesn't already have the Amazon credit card, can always pay off the monthly balance in full, and doesn't anticipate applying for a car loan or something in the near future, I'd suggest getting it. The 3% rebate on Amazon purchases and 2% rebate at gas stations isn't that big of a deal, but it doesn't hurt. Again, only if one doesn't plan to use credit for a major purchase in the next year or so, because applying for a new card does lower the credit score a bit for awhile.

For those who do have the Amazon/Chase card, I suggest collecting the rebate as a credit on the bill when you accumulate enough points. If you take the rebate as Amazon gift certificates you then forfeit the 3% rebate on that purchase amount. FWIW.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

I still don't have the Amazon card. I always think about it, but never do it. I just got a new c/c this year (AA promo to get 60,000 airline miles) so I didn't want to get two new cards in one year. But I probably should do it before the holiday season, since I know I'll be spending a lot. I have each of the last 2 years...

Not Amazon Chase related, but those with Discover cards get 2% cash back this period instead of 1%

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

My only ding on my credit report is from my Amazon credit card. One day, I wasn't able to purchase from Amazon due to card rejection, and I call the card bank to find out what is going on. Turns out, I hadn't paid my first couple bills. They offered to set up a payment plan for the approx $200 balance, which I instead paid over the phone. Not sure what happened on Amazons side of setting this up, but I definitely didn't get those first bills. The bank even removed the late fee for the trouble. A couple years later, I run a credit report and saw the ding from Amazon I've always meant to try to find out whether they can remove it or not.

I don't know if it had anything to due with my credit score, but the last time I bought a car, I told them it would take a couple weeks to sell stock to cover the purchase, and they were like no problem, here's the keys, see you in two weeks.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

The more credit you have available to you, the better your credit score will be. The bad part is opening cards to take advantage of special offers and then closing them. Your credit report and score will reflect a decrease in the amount of credit available to you, and ding your score accordingly.

Carrying a balance isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as you are making the minimum payments on time and still have credit available.

Missing payments and/or not paying at all is what is going to kill you.

Deadwood is supposed to be 83.99 so with 20% off that would be 67.19. Not too shabby even if I hate the packaging.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

To all who posted (and Jay G. for the links of credit cards), thanks for the info and correcting my misconception about having more than 2-3 credit cards. I saved those links and will read them later. So, I might get an Amazon credit card in the near future.

Given that an Amazon credit card application is instant, do you have any control over the credit limit or do they just give you a small (or big) starting amount? I assume that an Amazon credit card can be used anywhere but being an "Amazon" one it gives you an extra 3% normally (and sometimes 30% when they have specials). I assume any Amazon credit card will be issued through Chase?

Now if only there were a solution to getting Prime during the Black Friday week without having to subscribe for a whole year at $79. I've almost exhausted Amazon Mom (they won't let you extend it beyond a year). So I'll probably have to pay shipping (assuming most individual items will be under $25) on each order which will reduce what I buy (a $1.99 item won't be such a good deal with $3 of shipping on it). I just can't justify $79 for a week of purchases. During the rest of the year I don't order enough to be worth it (as I can usually find enough stuff I want to go over $25 if I have a little time, but on an Amazon lightning deal on BF when the item is gone in 10 seconds, I don't have time to group other lightning deals to hit $25).

Actually last year, in addition to the Amazon Mom promotion, they had a promotion for Prime for one month free and then it would automatically renew at $79 a year. It didn't get as much attention because of the Amazon Mom promotion, but it was there. Also, the year before they had the same promotion, but I think it was for two months. I hope they continue it another year but there are no guarantees. I wouldn't even mind if they did something that just allowed you to accumulate purchases from several transactions for FSSS since most of my Amazon purchases are not for gifts. But Amazon is pretty aggressive and I'm thinking there will be something in place to get people to stay home and still get great deals without having to worry about an extra $3 per order.

The ten seconds are just to add the deal to the cart. You then have 15 minutes to actually checkout. I have thought about this as well and there are usually a bunch of deals that last the weekend and making sure I have those searched out /added to my cart before the lightning deals so that when the time comes I am prepared. As much as I would like to have prime, I really can't justify it ... it's a great deal for people who buy alot during the year, want it quickly and might use the VOD, but I don't qualify in any of those categories. With no prime, I might have to give up some of the really small, marginal deals, but I'm prepared to pay for shipping for Dollhouse season 2 BD for ten bucks.
