However, there is no benefit for converting RZ certs, since those reduce the price of the item BEFORE tax anyway, thus negating the tax savings and the points. So I save the RZ certs for items I buy from BB, but GC's I convert to Amazon. It's worked out great so far!

Thanks Ken

They're pretty good with reviews for both formats and they do mention for some titles (Casino and Carlito's Way being just two of them), you're actually getting less by "upgrading" as extras have been cut out.

Used to be I'll upgrade anything if the price was low enough, but I've convinced myself to upgrade only for those titles where there is significant video/audio improvements or new extras over the DVDs/HD-DVDs I have already but the vast majority of these $6 titles doesn't. Was planning to order Event Horizon but looks like that deal is gone.

Thanks for the link. I do check their reviews from time to time, but didn't realize they had a master list of reviews... I do see that Casino has 2 TV specials which weren't on the HD-DVD, but that isn't worth $6 to me. I'll stick with my HD-DVD...

True Blood season 3 is $39.99. I bit, so to speak.

Went with Scream, Enter the Dragon and Event Horizon for the $6 Blu-rays. Had to hold off on a few.

If I read your post correct, you are getting RZ points buying Amazon Kindle GCs using a BB Gift Card. This means if we buy a BB Gift Card.. Get points.. and then use same Gift Card to buy Amazon Kindle GC... getting points a 2nd time.. If that is real, then I can see some double dipping in my future.. :D

I don't think you get points when you buy BBY gift cards. I don't think you're supposed to get points at all when you buy gift cards, nor are you supposed to be able to use gift cards to purchase other gift cards. At least that's how it's been at most retailers. The fact that BBY's POS system allows you to buy AMZN cards with BBY cards is what led me to ask the question in the first place. Now, I just hope C sends me the cards before they fix the loophole.

Strange that that's the only other option to watch a single TV series . . .

You can't resell a cable subscription either.

I'm not saying that DVDs/Blu-rays aren't a better option, I was just listing another way to view a TV show like Mad Men without subscribing to cable.

The discussion was options other than expensive cable for Mad Men so the resell of cable is irrellevant. Yes, iTunes and Amazon are options but the BDs and DVDs are usually less expensive and can be resold to recoup a little of the money so I feel they are the better option.

They probably are the better option for many, but they're not the only option.

iTunes/Amazon Video typically get the episodes only a day to a week after broadcast, so they may appeal to those too impatient to wait for a video release.

Good point. A Netflix streaming account is another option. Netflix will have all episodes of Mad Men available for streaming starting on July 27th.

I, also, have been getting RZ points when buying Amazon Kindle Cards.... and I have received points when buying Best Buy Gift Cards... which is per their own FAQ on RZ web-site.

Can I earn points when I purchase a Best Buy gift card?
Yes. You will earn points on Best Buy gift card purchases, but not on Best Buy gift card redemptions. Gift card purchases are excluded from all double, triple, and similar point promotions.
They do however not give you points when using a Gift Card.

What purchases are not eligible for point earning?
Non-qualifying purchases include, but are not limited to:
Purchases paid for with a Reward Certificate or Best Buy Gift Card
I removed all the other non-point earners in that quote.

The question I was posing to kenbenobi was if he was getting RZ points when using a BB GC to buy an Amazon GC...

Which hopefully he replies soon.. cause I am sure when you covert your BB GC to Amazon.. it would be worth it to get some BB RZ points..

No problem. I've just been relying on blu-ray.com and the other link I mentioned for fairly good reviews. I wish I could buy everything like I did in my DVD days, but nowadays, if you're on a budget, best to upgrade on things that provide good value.

Looks like Event Horizon is back in stock so I just might put together an order.

An alternative of going to bluray.highdefdigest.com is to start here at DVD-Basen and type in the title for region 1: http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3. If there is a review for HighDefDigest or Bluray.com, the links will be listed. I much prefer to search by title than to go to each site looking.

If you don't find anything, next try http://www.cinemasquid.com/home. Then Google... and of course Amazon reviews but they are often a mess with DVD, BD, and VHS reviews mixed together.

You do not acquire any best buy rewards points when you pay with a gift card.

Darn it, I bit on Shoot 'Em Up because people have been talking about it so much (like in the Drive Angry thread). I figure I have a couple days to cancel if I really get buyer's remorse. Also picked up a couple more gifts. Looked for a gift for my sister too but this is a guys' list.

Since I bought Starship Troopers for $6, Amazon is recommending I buy Starship Troopers 3 for $14.99 rotfl

EDIT: Fixed the title to "Drive Angry" instead of "Drive Hard"

"Easy's" comment that a $20 DVD set beats a $70 cable bill just seemed odd to me (despite its obviousness), considering the other options one can easily think of for seeing these at a more reasonable price, as others clearly realize. And if the resale of discs is a probability, that's all the more reason for someone to wait until they reach even lower prices, just as they have in the past . . . In fact, when they were $10 each last Christmas, I bought 2 of each, and eventually flipped the duplicates up here on Amazon Marketplace for approximately three times what I'd paid. :)

I don't think you'll regret it. I LOVE that movie! From the opening sequence, you'll be hooked. Paul Giamatti's character is a bit strange, but Clive Owen has non-stop action throughout the entire movie. I saw it in the theater, and had to buy it immediately when it came out...

created a new Prime account since my old expired 2 weeks ago.

I opted for 'Bad Boys' (almost got this from BB earlier in the week for $7.99) and 'Misery'. Both won't ship for a couple of weeks, but there's no rush.

Love these deals. When I first got into Blu Ray, I always swore that I would try not to get any titles unless they dropped below $10, unless I ABSOLUTELY had to have them. So far I'm doing pretty good

Manzana 05-20-11 09:12 AM

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Regarding Shoot 'Em Up, I got mine on DVD for $2 from a previous BF as a blind buy, and after watching it I was thankful that's all I paid. I wouldn't call it horrible, but it's utterly ridiculous. I don't remember many details, but I'm pretty sure with tons of bullets flying I was amazed how he manages to hit everyone and they keep missing him. I guess all the bad guys don't believe in target practice. I think I saw Shoot 'Em Up for $4 used on BD at Blockbuster this week and easily passed on it. Or maybe that was RocknRolla... both easy to pass on. My $2 DVD will suffice. For some good shooting I preferred Taken.

Regarding signing up for Prime, I still can't handle paying almost $80 for a year of it even though it's nice to have for $6 sales like this (I've had free Prime since November as part of a promo... when it ends I'll be sad). During BF week, I probably bought about 20-30 items from them. The rest of the year I average maybe 1 item a week. So I figure if I had to pay for it it works out to paying $1 shipping each order. That would be OK except it's very contingent on them having good deals consistently. If they stopped, then I could go weeks or months without ordering and my price per shipment would go up to $2 or $3 each. You never know if Amazon's BF deals will be as good as previous years.

You're welcome. I forget that not everyone knows about DVD-Basen. It's the best DVD review database I've found yet (if there are better ones someone please post the URL) and I use it frequently. Unfortunately (one must be warned) their links to DVD File are broken about 95% of the time, so I learned to ignore them, but I always recommend reading the reviews at: High-Def DVD Digest, Bluray.com, DVD Movie Guide (Colin's tastes are close to mine), DVD Beaver, and DVD Talk (of course). It depends how many reviews there are. For less popular movies there may 0-3 reviews so I read what's there.

For those few who care about layer info (as I do very much), the few sites that usually list it are for BDs: Hi-Def DVD Digest, Bluray.com, DVD Beaver, for DVDs: DVD Movie Guide, Digitally Obsessed, and Current Film. and a UK review site whose name escapes me.
