Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Thanks for the lists, Trevor and Solid Snake PAC.

I've been waiting for a drop on Starship Troopers, and I'm also in for Casino, which I've never seen.

Bullitt, Carlito's Way, and Shoot 'Em Up are tempting but I already have them on DVD. (And yes, I know I have three different versions of Starship Troopers on DVD, but that's different ). And I just rented Enter the Dragon for the Exploitation challenge--on the other hand, it had a ton of features that I didn't watch.

Kinda surprising how few of these I have on BD, really, when I have a lot on DVD.

I bit when it was $9.99 a few days back, but it appears everyone else did too and it hadn't shipped yet. Canceled that order and tossed this one in the cart along with all the $6 titles that I'm waiting for Beast Buy to reveal pricing for before committing to the order.

I'd bite on ROTLD but I can't bring myself to buy a film I own twice already on DVD, and there's no new content.

It'll never probably be this low again, but I think I'm okay with that.

I'll probably bite on Starship Troopers, T3, and Smokin' Aces.

I'll wait till midnight just in case though.

If the captures are anything to go by, the upgrade is insignificant especially if you already own the 2002 and 2007 releases (2002 for the better picture quality and 2007 for the extras).

RotLD would seem ripe for a future re-release.

The main reason I can't get myself to buy it is the changes to the soundtrack and the weird/bad edits that were done for this version.

Ok, so I fell asleep at 10pm. Did the Amazon prices remain at $6 for during the Best Buy Midnight Sale?

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Ended up buying about 10, half from BB to use a gift card. My philosophy used to be to never upgrade to BD for just VQ/AQ, but only if there were new extras. Most of my 500 or so BDs were titles I didn't own on DVD. But I went against form last night, as most of the ten were "upgrades". Looking back on the evening, I realize that it was just a buying spree to feed that addiction. Oh well, better than crack I suppose.

All depends. As much as some of us spend on Blu Rays, crack might be a cheaper alternative.

I gave up on that philosophy looong ago. But I refuse to upgrade a DVD if I lose extras, unless I gain new extras (but then I hang onto the DVD, of course). I have a hard time keeping myself from upgrading HD-DVD's to BD's. Many of the $6 titles in this sale I have on HD-DVD, but I held strong. Even if I gain extras, I won't upgrade an HD-DVD, UNLESS it is completely remastered and a HUGE improvement over the HD-DVD (which hasn't happened too much, thankfully). I tell myself that HD is HD, so stick with what I got. I ended up buying 6 titles in this sale. I had BB GC's, but wanted them faster from Amazon (and no tax), so I bought a Kindle GC yesterday after I heard about this sale, then ordered everything from Amazon.

I'm planning on doing this with about $300 in BBY GCs I have coming from credit card points. Just out of curiosity, do you get reward zone points on these as well?

you don't get reward zone points on items paid for with gift cards... technically the purchaser of the gift cards gets the points

Starship Troopers for $6 shipped was a no-brainer for me. Never even picked it up on DVD for some reason, though I've seen it several times and liked it a lot!

I agree with both of you. However, starting on Tuesday I started getting carried away and violating my policy with upgrades. I won't say how many $4 BD upgrades I got at Blockbuster as I'd be embarrassed. Better VQ/AQ is worth something, so I'll upgrade for that but the 2 key criteria are the price has to be $5 or less and it has to be a movie I especially like and think I'll watch more than once in a blue moon. The extras are more difficult. Before I upgrade I try to read the reviews to compare the extras, and if I find (as is often the case with Sony and Fox) they dropped extras from the DVD, that often will stop me from doing the BD upgrade unless the price is closer to $2 or $3. Like you then I end up keeping the DVD (the used DVD market is so pitiful now there's not much else you can do). Unfortunately this makes my BD want list and spreadsheet more complicated as I have to have info comparing the extras and such. Plus family criticizes me for spending so much time reading reviews and worrying about buying BDs of DVDs I already own, and they have a point. Is there a BD bargain rehab center somewhere? They say when the next HD format comes out, I'll repeat the same scenario over saying 2160p x 3840 is so much better than 1080p x 1920, so I have to upgrade all my BDs, but I hope with BD I'll say "it's good enough" and stop.

It's sad when upgrades aren't really upgrades in every category (i.e. PQ/AQ/extras). I'll admit that I've been a little bad violating my don't upgrade HD-DVD to BD if the PQ/AQ/extras are the same if it's a movie I like and the price is cheap enough. Fortunately I don't have that many HD-DVDs. As Trevor said (and Sir Lancelot in MPATHG) "I'm sorry... I just get a bit carried away".

For this $6 Amazon deal, I didn't do any upgrades this time around and only got Scream 1-3 because I didn't own any of them in any format (a rarity I know).

Thanks to Blockbuster I now have to buy a bunch more BD cases. I know people like the quality of Discmakers cases, but $43 for 100 still feels expensive.

I might bite on the Screams. I can't imagine that they are gonna get any cheaper. And I can't see any kind of better version coming out until maybe the new trilogy is all said and done.

I used to think that, but there's always $5 on Black Friday or the next Blockbuster used sale for $4 each. Then someday Big Lots will have BDs for $3. So they can always get cheaper, but when you're down to $6 you're most likely only going to lose a few dollars which is tolerable if you want the movie now.

Actually, you DO get points for buying Amazon Kindle GC's. I've done this many times already. That's the 2nd reason I've been converting my GC's (no tax being the #1 reason). However, there is no benefit for converting RZ certs, since those reduce the price of the item BEFORE tax anyway, thus negating the tax savings and the points. So I save the RZ certs for items I buy from BB, but GC's I convert to Amazon. It's worked out great so far!

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

For those debating whether to upgrade their HD-DVD to Blu, it's best to check out http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews_alpha.html. They're pretty good with reviews for both formats and they do mention for some titles (Casino and Carlito's Way being just two of them), you're actually getting less by "upgrading" as extras have been cut out.

Used to be I'll upgrade anything if the price was low enough, but I've convinced myself to upgrade only for those titles where there is significant video/audio improvements or new extras over the DVDs/HD-DVDs I have already but the vast majority of these $6 titles doesn't. Was planning to order Event Horizon but looks like that deal is gone.
