Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Regarding Hancock disappearing from stock earlier today...

If you're not set on the Unrated which has an extra 10 minutes of supposedly non critical or game changing scenes, there's another edition still in stock. The "bluray essentials" found here

Catch is, that the system doesn't recognize it as being eligible but I just went into the Amazon Help Chat and they ended up giving me a $3 promotion on my next order (I placed my Hancock order during the session). Calling or emailing may work as well.

Just an option if you really want it for $4 (assuming you have Prime which is easy to get free right now, see amazon.com/mom etc) and don't care about Unrated.

All of the 'blu-ray essentials' versions are just the previously released versions with a slipcover.

I have to say the unrated version is better. It remind me of a superman joke that came to life.

Huh? They just posted the price for Thursday. Seems like a retail price (not counting the $14.99 titles). I was looking at getting The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus or soap (still may on soap) but not much of a saving.

I wanted both in the same case so I paid the extra $2.
Regarding Knight and Day, does anyone know if the DVD case and blu-ray cases are individually shrinkwrapped?

That is the cheapest it has been at Amazon since the Spring, when it was the same price.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

Costco has it for $12.99, along with "Gone With The Wind", but you have to pay sales tax. It's almost the same net price after tax.

Gone With the Wind (The Scarlett Edition) $14.49
This is the three disc edition and it pisses me off because I jumped too soon.

Serious question: Does Amazon ever have a sale they initiated or do they simply respond to other stores? Seems like the latter to me. For example, the Gone with the Wind price is in response to Walmart lowering the price to $13.50 first. I doubt they would have done it otherwise.

Re: Amazon Discounts and Deals Thread #7 (is it #7? I'll pretend it is)

I also think that older catalog titles on Blu are so scarce that the manufacturers have, by their apparently intentional negligence in producing same, created a natural niche market for those few that are available. This will always translate as higher prices for the reasons that Lizard and others have speculated.

I have to wonder if the studios are shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing more older titles in Blu. It seems the next generation is going to embrace streaming and watching content on hand held devices and not investing much concern into the type of outstanding quality that Blu offers. Thus the Blu devotees and those who appreciate a more high end viewing experience are only going to get older and be looking for titles from their personal history.

It's a shame that the studios seem to have established the impression into the marketplace that only RECENT movies will benefit from the technology. I've said it before in these forums: Why is dreck like LEATHERHEADS on Blu and not THE GREAT ESCAPE?

Anyway, not a bargain, just a rant. Back to the topic and such deals as NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS for $25.00!!!!

tbvh, I ended up snagging a used copy of the 2 disc unrated for $4.66 from Amazon. After reading up on the differences, I decided I must see the new scenes for myself, cause that's the kind of extra scenes I enjoy even if they don't really add much to the overall movie.

I'll gift the other one to my friend who usually doesn't care much about that kind of stuff and will be happy to have it.

I agree with your whole post. I'm a bit older and mainly care to have Blu for catalog titles that have been given the royal treatment (or at least a HD transfer that is impressive).
I love seeing an older movie look almost new. I get a bigger thrill out of that than something current. Don't get me wrong, I watch mostly newer movies, but owning them... that's a different story.

Hancock Unrated Special Edition blu-ray is back in stock, but the GRHORNET promo code does not work on it anymore.

Got my Knight and Day Blu-ray and DVD pack today. When I was opening the box my wife asked, 'why did you get both Blu-ray and DVD, that's stupid?' I explained that it was actually cheaper to buy both and she said, 'well that's stupid'. To which I replied, 'the more you use that word, the less impact it has'.

Just picked up WWII in HD, V For Vendetta, Heat and Across the Universe for under 35 bucks. Not bad.

I really need to stop this thread - can the mods lock it please?

Picked up 'Heat' and 'Gran Torino' for $6.99 - couldn't pass it up really.

Thanks for the tip. I would have picked up at this price now, if I hadn't already done so in late '09 / early '10.
