That's funny-- the 2 titles I ordered on-line were Gimme Shelter & Paris Texas too.

I'm on vacation so I didn't want to bother with checking in stores when I get back next week. I'm not a member but I was able to get 10% off one of them too which made it $17.99 + 19.99 + free shipping. (I read that additional coupons weren't working for some people but I placed my order on Monday night, shortly after the sale started & the coupon seemed to have stuck-- it already shipped too.) Not bad. I'm happy at those prices.

I thought about picking up Gomorrah too but I didn't want to overdo it. (How's that look on Blu?)

And too bad you can't pre-order... I would have loved to have thrown in Crumb too.

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

Went to "look" at B&N and came out with six items for ~$90. I used a 15% coupon and a $5 off. I could have used one per item and they were really nice about doing it. Should've printed a couple more!

My haul:
1. Ride with the Devil CC Blu-ray
2. Stagecoach CC Blu-ray
3. Chungking Express CC Blu-ray in Digipack
4. Night Train to Munich CC
5. Life Aquatic 2-Disc CC with slipcover
5. Royal Tenenbaums 2-Disc CC with slipcover

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

I'm fairly new to buying Criterion Collection DVDs. The few DVDs I have from last year came in heavy cardboard cases, but I just went to my local B&N and all the Blu-Rays come in clear plastic cases. Is CC abandoning the cardboard cases for all their releases, just the BDs, just some of their releases, or is this just the case (no pun intended) at my local B&N?

Some are in cardboard, some are in clear cases. They started out with cardboard for the first few (9-ish, if I'm remembering it correctly) BDs, then moved to clear cases (and they offered "replacement cases" for $5 a piece on those who wanted to replace the cardboard). Some of the people around here are probably more knowledgeable about that (I, personally, like cool packaging, but it isn't going to influence my purchase one way or another).

If anyone has details on the replacement cases, I would like to know. I have The Third Man BD that I had purchased a year or so ago in the cardboard case.

Thanks!

I'm really trying to exercise self-control with this sale. I placed what should be my only order (all Blu-rays):

By Brakhage
Vivre Sa Vie
Mystery Train

From the Blu-ray forum thread:

We are offering replacement cases for the following titles:

THE THIRD MAN
THE LAST EMPEROR
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH
BOTTLE ROCKET
CHUNGKING EXPRESS
THE 400 BLOWS
THE LAST METRO
EL NORTE

Please note that we are temporarily out of stock on all cases and expect more to arrive next week. The cost for the replacement cases is $5 per case; this includes the cost of shipping. For multiple cases we offer a discount of $10 for the first two and $2.50 for each additional case beyond that (so, for instance, $12.50 for three cases).

To order the cases, simply make a payment to the email address [email protected] through PayPal, providing your mailing address and item(s) needed in the message field, and we'll send out the materials!

I hope this information is helpful! Please let me know if you have any more questions and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Best,

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

So far so good...

Online utilizing the AAA link and a 10% coupon the first day:

- Yojimbo & Sanjuro (shipped)

In-store:

- Walkabout
- Gomorrah
- 8½ (upgrade)
- Kagemusha (upgrade)

All Blu-rays. Up to this point I've only done two separate transactions in one visit. I might actually attempt combining some coupons if the right cashier is there tomorrow.

Thanks for the info CardiffGiant. I thought the cardboard cases for the DVDs like Seven Samurai and The Third Man were cool, but the clear plastic cases for the BDs certainly aren't a dealbreaker for me.

Thanks for the info on the cases.

Tracked down 1 copy of The Man Who Fell To Earth via the website and had them hold it. Picked it up tonight with my membership and a $5 off coupon for a total (with taxes) of $14.01.

Picked up Revanche, Gomorrah and Wings Of Desire today.

Probably will go back for a 2nd and final trip for next Tuesday's new releases and Kagemusha.

The extra 10% online through the Library link isn't working anymore, are any of the others? I guess Bing is still 8% through the 31st, right?
Ignore me!

Well, got shot down using a $5 off today. Guess it just depends on the cashier.

I did use one of the 15% off coupons, so ended up paying about $2.30 more than when using the $5 coupon. Still ... $16.xx for a Criterion blu-ray is a great deal.

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

Here's my haul so far (all Blu-ray):

- 8 1/2
- Days of Heaven
- For All Mankind
- Gomorrah
- The Man Who Fell To Earth
- Mystery Train
- Paris, Texas
- Playtime
- Vivre sa vie
- Walkabout

$13 plus tax each.

And I picked up "Che" as a birthday gift from my dad to me (my birthday is on the 30th), since I didn't want to make him try and go to the store with coupons and try and get it for me at the best possible price. And then I'm just deducting what it cost from what I owe him for my car insurance payment this month, and then he'll wrap it up and give it to me.

So that's technically 11 so far. I might hold off until later in the sale and buy a few more, as there are some I still want to get, such as "The Leopard," "By Brakhage," and "Hunger," among others.

Any chance someone wants to trade my open "Repulsion" DVD for their open or sealed "Repulsion" Blu-ray? I bought it last year during the first sale, before I had any intentions of going Blu.

I'd offer up the same deal for "Bottle Rocket" as well.

I'll pay for your Media Mail shipping.

I picked up Stagecoach, 8 1/2 and Bottle Rocket for $45 and change total.

Used the two $5 off coupons and a 15% one. Didn't want to press my luck on three $5 dollar off coupons.

I pre-ordered The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus, then bought:

M
Paris, Texas
Walkabout
Red Desert

Used the AAA discount on all of them. I almost bit on Mystery Train but figured that $120 worth of Blu-rays was enough.

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

Got Stagecoach, Ride with the Devil, and Paris, TX yesterday. $13 each with three $5 coupons. I debated getting a 4th title, just to try using the $5 off $50 coupon, but they didn't have any other Criterions I was interested in. I'm only buying BD's now.

Have stores starting receiving the repackaged BD's? I haven't seen them yet. I'm curious if the replacement cases have the same UPC's as the original releases. I have two that are still sealed (Bottle Rocket and The Man Who Fell to Earth), so perhaps I can exchange them in a store if the UPC's match.

Very sneaky. I could have missed them, but in the three stores I've checked it appears to still be all old packaging.

Re: Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble, 50-80% all titles in-store and online

I was very lucky at the Brier Creek location in Durham, NC - I was allowed to use the $5 coupons + the $5 off $50; came out to about $12 on the $39.99 titles. On one transaction I tried to use the 15% off (so six coupons on 4 discs)...but doesn't appear that kind of 'stacking' worked (not that I'm complaining!). I was just honest with the cashier right up front - I asked if it was possible to use multiple coupons on a single transaction. She didn't see a problem with it, as long as the computer accepted it (and it did). Probably helped that I was the only one in the section at the time.

I began watching El Norte this morning; a blind-buy. I really like it so far - great cinematography, sympathetic characters, etc.

You're not supposed to actually watch these, you know. They're supposed to sit on your shelf unwatched for years, or at least until after two additional 50% off sales have occurred.
