Stores like YesAsia and DDDhouse have them to order. Most of them will set you back from $35 to $40 apiece. Here's a good discussion on the entire Studio Ghibli output from Hong Kong.

Here is YesAsia's link for Laputa: Castle In The Sky Hong Kong Blu-ray, fully playable on American players with English subtitles. $37.99

19.99 Criterion blu-rays:

The Last Emperor
The Thin Red Line
12 Angry Men
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

First time I've seen Criterions at Costco.

re: Costco discounts and deals on Blu-ray

Hmmm...just checked my Costco warehouse online and they are not showing the Universal titles as available. Not that it matters as I just ordered Out of Africa and All Quiet from amazon a couple of days ago. Had some credit to burn there.

I usually wait for sub-$20 on digibooks (Costco price point would be perfect), but have been dying for Out of Africa since the first release and held off buying it. Most comments I've read indicate the new release pretty much corrects the disastrous transfer of the old one.

Nice prices if your local Costco has 'em.

re: Costco discounts and deals on Blu-ray

The new digibook release of Out of Africa is definitely on my buy list, and I'm glad I avoided getting the old release for $5 from BB with their DVD trade-in program since I fortunately read the BD reviews first. Unfortunately $19.99 is a dream-on-land for me for almost any movie unless it's a popular new release in 3D BD. I'll probably pull the trigger when it gets under $10. Maybe by Christmas...

Has anyone seen Downton Abbey Season 1 at Costco? I see season 2 on dvd and bluray but not season 1. That doesn't help for those who want to see the show but haven't seen season 1!!

Sorry but not for about a year. It was available at Costco when it was first released. Unless someone returns a copy or Costco gets it again, you are probably out of luck.

I haven't seen any of Criterions at Costcos near me, which is frustrating. If anyone sees them in NYC or suburbs please post here. . I did see and buy the Universal sets. Thanks for the heads up.

re: Costco discounts and deals on Blu-ray

^ I went there yesterday and surprise surprise they did have Season 1 of the UK version (the better version)! There was a whole bunch of standard dvds but no blurays. No matter, standard was what I was looking for. It definitely is worth the hype. I've seen the first two episodes already and I'm hooked.

Whoever from Costco who read my post, thank you!

That is great. The uncut UK version was the only version of Season 1 released on DVD in the US. Season 2 was broadcast uncut on PBS so there is no difference between UK and USA versions. However purchasing Season 2 you are better off with the US version which includes the Christmas episode. In the UK this was sold separately and not included in the series 2 DVD release. This episode was broadcast in the UK on Christmas. The Series 2 DVD in the UK came out prior to the broadcast so this episode was not included.

Costco has a bunch of cheap Blu-Ray's that they got in recently.

I saw these for $6.99
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole with Slipcover
Yogi Bear with Slip
Gremlins
and tons of others. For some reason I'm blanking on the names, I was just there.

I was there yesterday and noticed a ton of new cheap stuff, too, but didn't even think to jot down what all was in. I do recall seeing some two-packs of Clint Eastwood movies - the Any Which Way flicks; Kelly's Heroes/Where Eagles Dare; Sudden Impact/Magnum Force (IIRC) - for ~$12 and West Side Story (just movie, not the box) for

That's even better. I couldn't recall and figure $8 was too low for a twofer. Thanks.

West Side Story, mentioned above, is actually $12.99, and they also had South Pacific and The Sound of Music (non-box, non-digibook) for the same price. All three are impressive transfers and are a good value.

Where The Wild Things Are was one of the other $6.99 BD's in that batch.

I bought West Side Story BD for $12.99 (the one in the fat set but not the giant set) at Target PM'd to Fry's when it first came out, then I read all the hub-bub about how the opening transfer was messed. Next I read how the studio issued a replacement disc which still didn't correct the problem entirely, so I returned mine and decided to wait for a lower price and/or a truly corrected disc. Since I already have the DVD CE set and I'm not a huge fan of the movie, I can wait.

I returned mine as well, Manzana. It's a mess and I don't need to have it until it's been genuinely fixed.
