Re: The Directors Tourney

I would only caution you that someone will inevitably respond either here or with a thread in feedback claiming that there are too many director polls dominating the movie forum.

For that reason, I say go for it. I always enjoy those debates. :D

Re: The Directors Tourney

I'm shocked someone hasn't already started a thread in feedback about the Director threads.

Fincher vs Nolan

Lynch vs Tarantino

Coppola vs Kubrick

Scorsese vs Spielberg

I think we could have three more director polls and the winners of each would face off against each other to decide who the most popular director on DVDTalk is. Anyone interested?

Those are my threads... you leave them alone! -wink- :)

Hey you forgot my Cronenberg/Carpenter poll.

I like the discussion generated in the one on one match-ups.

Anyway I'm done making these polls for awhile...

I'm certainly not interested in debating the merits of hacks like Boll, PT Anderson, Bay etc..

I'm game for a tourney though if you want to put something together.

I'm game..make it a tourney.

Or you could just save yourself some time and put up "Nolan vs. Tarantino".

ooooooooooor that could work too.....

Re: The Directors Tourney

Ok, I'll go for it. It could lead to some interesting discussions. Here are the instructions of how the tourney is going to work.

* All "Director vs Director" threads that are going to be included in the tourney must be posted by 9:30 AM Pacific Time, or 12:30 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday August 3rd 2010. At this same time the polls for the tourney will officially be closed. Meaning if Tarantino for example is only one vote ahead of Lynch at 9:30, but at 10:00 Lynch is ahead of Tarantino, the spot still goes to Tarantino.

* If we have an odd number of threads, then the director with the most dominant win will get to sit out every other round.

* All rounds will have a 3 day life span, meaning polls will be open for exactly 3 days.

* The winner of each round will randomly be paired up with another director up until only two directors are left, at which point the champion will be "crowned".

* The final round's poll will be open for 4 days as opposed to 3.

* All Directors being included in the first round of the tourney are highlighted in green in the opening post.

* If a poll is tied, both directors will move to the next round.

If you have any rule suggestions or questions feel free to PM me. Also if I happen to have missed a "versus" thread PM me or respond in this thread. Thanks.

You don't think it's going to come down to Fulci vs. Lynch?

Re: The Directors Tourney

Now out of all this madness...I'm pretty sure our list of films to see for each of us has grown a bit more.

Re: The Directors Tourney

There's so many of these things going now that I just entered into the Laurel & Hardy thread in the DVD forum, intending to vote for one or the other. :D

I'd like it to be a tourney.

It's also the most fun I've had on these boards in months! I absolutely love that everyone and their grandma is getting involved, and the conversations are all killer.

I love movies. I love films. They're not the same thing (to me), but I certainly adore both. And, at this point in time, money has become (pretty much) no object for me, entertainment-wise....so I am really enjoying this whole "best director" thing, as I'm buying new DVDs/Blus as we speak. Educational, AND it will deliver again, on my TV, when I watch some great new stuff. And if I find new faves, it will keep on deliverin'. :D

Best idea I've seen here in some time.

Yeah, I know. I'm getting all these things I have to see. I knew they existed but w/ these threads and a brief but respectable understanding people are giving out it gets my interest for sure.

These are all pretty good threads, and really only the Charles Shyer or Richard Benjamin? one makes me go "who the fuck are they?" and also its the only one on the 2nd page now.

/\ Indeed, that one was kind of a headscratcher for me. I was worried with my Reiner/Marhsall thread that it may be seen as a joke, but I maintain that those two are a decent comparison.

Holy damn, there are a lot of these match-ups! I enjoyed discussing Eyes Wide Shut in the Coppola/Kubrick thread, but most of the other discussion seems to largely be of the "The one I didn't vote for hasn't done anything remotely as great as the one I did vote for" persuasion. Hopefully, there'll be some more interesting discussion about the actual work of the directors in question as we proceed.

Yeah I started this shitstorm entirely by accident. I did the Fincher/Nolan thread a week or so ago, and followed it up with 3 more director/poll threads.

I come back today and this place has gone crazy.

I think If I would have just worked in one poll a week, this probably wouldn't have happened.

I do enjoy Suprmallet's match-ups though.

Well thank you! :) This whole thing has been a lot of fun, although I don't think we should add too many more at this point.

So is there a reason why we have great directors vs other great directors in the qualifying round?

Yeah I hear you. But I do want to do my Friedkin/Boorman match-up tomorrow.:D

FRwL 08-02-10 10:05 PM

Re: The Directors Tourney

Yes that is the perfect match, i was thinking of who was the guy that did Point Blank but didn't know much of anything else from him and Friedkin had to be on here but didn't put those two together for some reason. Perfect

Exactly

There should be a nomination process so the Directors with most votes get seeded highest and are pitted against Directors with least amount of votes

All of the directors that are going to be included in the tourney are now in the opening post, no more will be added. So people can STOP making these threads if there goal is to make it into the tourney.

This was not started off as a tourney, it's just transformed into one.

Ok. Let me figure something like that out.

Here are the revised tourney rules, as I'm following a new format.

* The directors with the most votes will be seeded first and will be pitted against the directors with the least amount of votes. All directors in a "versus" thread will be included. Voting ends on Monday, August 2nd at 8:30 PM Pacific Time.

* 6 directors will be included in each poll, vote for your favorite. The top 3 will stay in the tourney, the bottom two will be eliminated.

PM me if you have any suggestions, as this is my first tourney. I'm compiling the information as we speak, and director placement will be added to this thread soon. Thank you.
