In his review of The Greatest Story Ever Told, Chuck Arrington states, "In his Motion Picture debut, Max Von Sydow imbues the role of Jesus with a compassion and love that more recent renderings have not so richly emphasized."
This is surprising to read, since von Sydow had been making films since 1949 and, by the time GSET was made, he was world-famous for his portrayal of Antonius Block in The Seventh Seal (1957). He had also appeared in other major Bergman films including The Face (USA: The Magician), Wild Strawberries, The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly and Winter Light, to name just those that spring to mind.
