If you're referring to "Love's Labor Lost," then you must have been watching a REPEAT of ER.

It's an episode that aired in ER's first season, on March 9, 1995, and it happens to be my ALL-TIME favorite ER episodes. It puts the current Season 7 episodes to shame.

Anyway, in this episode, a man brings his pregnant wife into the ER, and Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield, et al race around the clock when complications arise with the mother's pregnancy...I forget what the particular complications were, but that's irrelevant.

They are able to save the baby, but are unable to revive the mother, despite Anthony Edwards' REAPEATED attempts.

In the most powerful scene ever to grace ER television moments, Anthony Edwards is forced to go up to the nursery, confront the father (who's cradling his newborn baby) and tell him the dire news -- What's powerful about it, is that the scene is done behind closed doors, but we see through the glass window. We can't hear what's being said, but from the husband's reaction and A. Edwards' performance, we don't need to.

The final scene, which takes place approx. 24 hours since the beginning of the episode, features an exhausted Sherry Stringfield and Anthony Edwards waiting for the subway.

Greene gets on his train, and then bursts into tears..tears of frustration.... Fade to black. Run end credits.

This is the episode which drove Dr. Greene over the edge...Way into Season 2. At the end of this episode, you TRULY feel how much a failure Dr. Greene must have felt at this point.

Pat, since you own a laserdisc player, why don't you consider getting the Japanese import ER Season 1 boxset? This episode is included and EASILY justifies the boxset's price all by itself.

One of the finest moments on TV. I mean, the acting and story are incredible.

I liked how they ran the episode with Anthony Edwards doing an intro at the beginning. It would be cool if they did stuff like that more often rather than showing re-runs of the current season during the season.

This was one of the best episodes ever and probably is in my top five or so, along with the one directed by Quentin Tarantino (anybody remember the name of that one and what season it was in?) and the one that centered on Marguiles when she was in the convenience store that was held up by Ewan McGregor. Great episodes and I wish I had them on tape.

Anybody know if these are available on VCD or something? I don't have a laser disc player but would love to have the collection.

Thanks for the recap! I vaguely remember this episode and the outcome now. Mimi Leder directed this show, and you can see her touch on the episode. Also I now know the mother was the actress that was about to commit suicide and jump off a bridge in "Pay It Forward". I did enjoy the 1st and second year of ER probably more than today because today, it's got more of a soap opera feel to the episodes. I miss seeing Sherry Stringfield on TV. I could do without Clooney though.
