Ok this is pissin me off. About a month ago I ordered Gladiator from buy.com

When I ordered it said in stock...Well after I ordered it became Backordered. Still dont have the DVD, and I think its a pretty common DVD.

I also have the Best of Friends Set on order too. Ordered that one the same time at Gladiator only it was Backordered at that time.

Here is what I find weird though. On the buy.com web site Gladiator is on preorder. Check the link:

http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product...144835&loc=107

Is there something I am missing? Buy.com has gotten terrible lately.

After checking the BUY.COM site I suspect you're looking at the DTS edition of Gladiator - which is listed for release date of March 13. The normal Gladiator is very hard for companies to keep in stock. My friend - who works at Virgin MegaStores in NYC - says their store has had it on order for over a month now & they STILL have not received any more copies. Keep in mind that all (many) of the dot-coms are trying to make some money. Their market capitalization has gone from great to devestating in many cases, prices are going up and service is going down.

Plus - the format is getting more popular and there is apparently not enough production capacity in the country to keep up with the demand. When an item is OOS (out of stock) at the company (MGM for example) how do they go about making more? Does the order (from MGM to the production factory) get stuck into some kind of queue and has to wait it's turn to get an additional 100,000 copies (for example). Does anybody know how this works??

Anyway - getting long Hope you understand what I'm TRYING to say.

I don't think there are two different versions of this dvd, I beleive it has both DTS and DD 5.1.

You're right! Know what I say? "Can't argue with a F****R who's right". Okay then - I got no idea in heck why they're listing it as release date of Mar 13. Sometimes they list it as a pre-order when there is a price reduction (from the studio), but I searched for price reduction info & found nothing! Who Knows? Sorry!

I would stay away from buy.com unless they're offering an incredible deal, given their almost certain march toward dot.com death.

As far as danwiz's prescient comment on production capacity - it's similar to when CD's first came out. The prices were high because of the demand surge. But then alot of new facilities for stamping out discs came on line. Guess what? Prices never came down. Profits are the drug of the business world.

I think Buy.com is having some serious problems with whoever gets their stock and ships it. Over the past year I have probably bought 100 DVD's from them and all but one have arrived by release date and in some cases the day before. However my last 4 preorders, all with January or February release dates have not shipped on time or at all. The shipping status keeps saying "on order" but if you search for the item it has changed to "ships in 24-48 hrs" implying it's in stock. I have sent several e-mails asking why the orders haven't shipped and get a reply about problems with the manufacturer. In 2 cases they have issued me $10 credits because of the long delay in shipping the item. However they still do not know when the items will ship. Time to start buying somewhere else again.
