Hello,

I'm having a tough time picking up a new TV. I want one under $349 and by looking at Circuit City I've come across a few. Could any please give me their opinion on one or many of these sets. Thank you very much.

GE 27GT722
RCA F27442
ZENITH B27A11Z
PANASONIC CT27G5
ZENITH C27A24T
PHILIPS MAGNAVOX TP2785C
SONY KV27S42

Go to your local library and read the December 2000 Consumer Reports review on 27" and 32" TVs. I picked up their top recommended TV, the Toshiba 27A50, for about $340 at Best Buy (on sale, plus I had a coupon), it's worth more if you can't find it for this price.

Forget about the RCA, GE, and Zenith brands right off, though. Per Consumer Reports: "A note on reliablity: For several years sets in these and other sizes from RCA, GE, and ProScan - all made by Thomson Consumer Electronics - have had the worst repair records, according to our reader surveys. Our data on 35 and 36- inch TVs, which we'll cover in a report early next year, show similar problems for ProScan and RCA TVs, and for sets from Zenith."

For $349 I can narrow it down to only 2 choices.

Toshiba 27A40 $349 or less
Panasonic CT27-D10 $349 or less

Both these sets have S-Video and Component inputs along with great pictures. I have the Toshiba 27A40 and love it. I got mine on sale for $279 so you can find deals on them. The only difference between the 27A40 and 27A50 is the 27A50 has PIP. The 27A50 will run $50 more usually. I didn't need the pip.

I would definitely stay away from the RCA, GE, and Zenith. The Sony should be ok if you found a deal on it but I don't think it has component inputs.

My parents have had a 25" inch Zenith for just over a year and it is garbage now. It died just over a month after they bought it and then died again about a week after the 1 year warranty was up. The sad thing is that they hardly even used the TV. They may have watched it once a week and the most.

So for a 27" TV I'd focus on Toshiba and Panasonic. No matter what you decide make sure it has multiple types of inputs like S-Video, component and regular RCA A/V cable.

Thanks a lot to everyone who has posted replies. Any more suggestions would be great.

I have a questions though. It's on component video. How much of an improvement is it over S-Video? I'll do some searching around the site for posts like this but if someone can give me an answer it'd help me a lot.

So currently I have my eyes on

PANASONIC CT27G5
PHILIPS MAGNAVOX TP2785C
SONY KV27S42

and might be interested in

Toshiba 27A40
Panasonic CT-27-D10

but only if I can find them at low prices. I mean like near $300 or lower. That might be impossible.
