My brother is just now getting into DVD and is interested in upgrading his system. Currently he has a
*21" TV
*Lower model toshiba DVDplayer
*Onkyo reciever (rather old...not sure on model # or if DD)
*4 Kenwood speakers-each with 12" woofer, 5 inch midrange, and 1 inch tweeter (model #??)
***No sub and no center channel

?????
Would he be best in selling his current speakers & possibly reciever online and buying new speakers &/or a reciever? or should he get a center, sub, and surrounds to add to 2 of his current speakers?
Would a HT-in-a-box be best?

He doesn't want to spend much money ($500-$700 is my best guess)
I know I haven't given a lot of detail about his current system, but that's all he's told me so far. Thanks.

Sounds like to me he needs a new reciever.
Those speakers should be allright for the fronts. He now needs to buy a center and rear speakers. He can wait on the sub.(but not too long!) Spend most of the money on a decent reciever.

For $700 he could replace both his receiver and speakers and get a sub, and have $$$ left over to save toward a new TV. A friend of mine went from a set-up like your bro's to the $299 Kenwood HTIB and he loves it, b/c even though the gear is cheap, it's still a huge step up from what he had and it sounds incredible to him. My guess is your brother would feel the same. Go audition some HTIBs in all price ranges and see if that works. If not, then I'd follow andremike's advice and upgrade piece-by-piece, starting with the receiver.

The reviews on the Kenwood HT-503 sound great. Since he's already got Kenwood mains I'm guessing they may blend well with the system. Anyone else think so?
