I was considering the ensemble IV package as a beginning HT. I know it doesnt have a powered sub. What are the major differences between powered and passive subs? I don't need earth shaking bass, just true surround sound. My only other option is not getting aone at this point. Is it worth getting or should I not even bother. Thanks for your input.

A powered sub is needed for truly good bass, unless you are in a small room. The non-powered subs that come with the CSW and Bose systems are more accurately considered bass modules that are the equivalent of the "woofer" part of full-size speakers. They do not go down deep enough to really be considered subs. I have the Ensemble IV as a system in my kitchen and actually, it is fine for me there, but I would never use it as a main system in my living room. If you have a dorm room or just a bedroom in your parent's house or something like that, then this system should be fine for that. If you are not concerned about bass but simply achieving good budget surround sound, then the CSW speakers are a good value that sounds decent in pro-logic, but is not really adequate for 5.1 since that ideally would require full-range separate rear speakers.
