Anyone use a preamp w/ antenna?

Vaguely related to home theatre....
I have pretty good VHF reception through an attic antenna, except for 2 stations. I'm thinking of using an antenna pre-amp to improve the reception, as well as be able to pull in all the high-channel UHF digital signals (I get most, but not all).
Has anyone used one of these and noticed a significant improvement? I've seen several models on-line for sale, but the techie lingo doesn't mean anything to me.
Any input is appreciated, other than "move the antenna to the roof".
