I'm throwing around the idea of getting a new receiver. Over the past few months I've significantly upgraded everything EXCEPT my receiver so I figure it's probably time. I thought I'd ask for opinions from the hardware forum. So how about it peeps?

I'm thinking of something in the $800-1000 range.

Here are a few you might want to check out:
Marantz SR-7000 (~800)
Marantz SR-8000 (~1100)
Onkyo 787 (~1000)
Harman Kardon 510 (~900)
Denon 4800
Denon 3801 (don't know prices on the Denon line)
The best way to go is to listen to these yourself (preferably in your home, but at least on the same speakers as those you have) and decide what sounds best to you.

Happy shopping!

I bought the Sony V555ES receiver for it's sound and great bass control! It is in your price range and has great Music as well as HT sound! The Bass Management is better then anything else out there in that you can adjust the small speaker bass level all the way down to 40Hz. on all the speakers. Most others will go down to 100Hz.- 80Hz.. I myself have large 15" three way speakers all around that go down to 32Hz. so I can set my speakers to small and adjust my bass bypass down to 40Hz. and all the rest of the bass still goes to the main speakers but from 40Hz. under it all goes to the Subs (which will reproduce 40Hz under better then the mains anyway!

I've done quite a bit of research and had settled on the Marantz SR-8000 for about $950. However, when I went to buy it a few weeks ago, my dealer told me to wait until after CES because there were rumors about a new model coming out.

Check out the reviews on this receiver -- and its remote.

You can't go wrong with a Yamaha, Denon, or Onkyo in that price range. Good design and good processors without the useless bells'n'whistles. Even in the $500-$700 range, these receivers will put out lots of clean high-current power, more than the "watts per channel" spec might suggest. (Or perhaps some other brands put out less?) I'd avoid the Pioneer, JVC, Sony, etc. stuff. Marantz and Harman-Kardon are also good brands to check. I like the Denons, which have a nice 5-channel stereo mode for music.

There's always a new model coming out...
