It's my first entry into the "good receiver" category (replacing a 10+ year old JVC stereo receiver), but I love it. It's connected to a homemade subwoofer and B&W 302 bookshelf speakers - sounds great! I paid $730 for mine from J&R (mail order) in New York. Don't get ripped off for a grand by Crutchfield.

High quality stuff...you'll definitely like it. It's the 676's big brother, so just check out reviews for the 676...the difference is the remote has more memory, it has more wattage, and a couple other small things.

You may also want to consider the Denon AVR-3801. Where the 3801 is not a THX receiver (Keep in mind the Onkyo is THX "Select", not "Ultra" certified), it does offer DTS ES 6.1 Matrix & Discrete modes in addition to Dolby Digital Matrix 6.1.
I've seen prices right around $799 a few places online.
