Thelma -- US remake (D: Craig Gillespie)
I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is on board to helm an English-language remake of the 2017 Norwegian psychodrama Thelma by director Joachim Trier, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
FilmNation Entertainment optioned the remake rights and hired screenwriter Christy Hall to adapt Trier's film about the sexual awakening of a shy young woman raised according to fundamentalist religious beliefs, but finding herself with telekinetic abilities she struggles to understand and control.
The Scandinavian horror pic had a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. FilmNation will finance and produce the English language adaptation, and will handle international sales.
UTA Independent Film Group will shop the domestic rights to the Thelma remake.
Gillespie is repped by UTA and Management 360.

The original is good. I like Gillespie’s work, but this seems unnecessary.

Thelma was my favorite film of last year. I’ll be happy if this gives it a wider audience I guess, but yes, this seems unnecessary.
