South Korea's put out a few good ones recently, check out I Saw the Devil (2010) or The Chaser (2008).

Zodiac was the first thing that popped into mind. Not a big budget movie but give Mindhunters on Netflix a watch. Great show.

I’ve watched Zodiac several times and it has bored the shit out of me each time. It’s one of those movies that I really want to like but just don’t.

Ask, why would they have a full table’s worth of those empty fruit cocktails? I get for the movie it’s a little gag to show that RDJ actually liked them after they were suggested, but wouldn’t the waiter have cleared the fucking table after each round?

Agreed on Zodiac. Memories of Murder wasn't that recent, but that was also great. I think that one was a South Korean movie...Snowtown was also great, and I don't think it's that old...That one was extremely disturbing...Nothing Bad Can Happen is another extremely dark one...I think that was released by Drafthouse Films...

Another vote for Zodiac. Great performances, atmospheric, like the period setting, and the case itself is rather interesting just for the fact that the identity of the Zodiac is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in history.

Big Bad Wolves...The Silence (ignore the rating the Blu-Ray got on this site...I can't believe it was panned and got only one-and-a-half stars...I would've given it four or even five, and every person I've shown it to has loved it, even though it is extremely disturbing)...Both great recent movies...

The Frozen Ground with John Cusack and Nicolas Cage is a pretty underrated serial killer movie that only came out a few years ago...

I'm not sure if it's "died off," but the recent run of English language serial killer movies hasn't produced anything good. Just last year there was The Snowman, which was largely panned. In 2012, there was Alex Cross, which was supposed to launch a franchise, but failed. Wikipedia has a list, although I think many would be considered "slahser films" rather than "serial killer" films.
