This comes on DVD and BD tomorrow. It's made $579M+ total worldwide. It was a huge box office hit in Asia.

Looks pretty badass. This is the unofficial sequel to the movie called "Operation Mekong" I have the DVD of Operation Mekong and it's pretty good. It's also on Netflix.
The BD is $15 at Amazon

As seen by clicking deeper within the link DJariya posted, $575 million of that admittedly impressive $579 million haul was made in China -- where as per policy the CCP made sure it had no box-office competition and bullied everyone into seeing it as their patriotic duty -- so it wasn't really a huge box office hit in greater Asia. In fact, it was barely released, if at all, in most other Asian countries because they don't generally respond to stone-faced, soulless, anti-individualist propaganda as readily as pre-conditioned Mainlanders.
Mind you, based on sheer technical proficiency, it's definitely worth a looksee, even if Dante Lam made many superior action movies (populated by real human beings) in Hong Kong before heading north in 2015
Wellgo USA releases so many party-approved movies at this point they should probably just label themselves an official division of the CCP

Did this play theaters in the U.S. at all? Usually these films play at least a week in one theater in Manhattan, but I didn't hear about this one before.

I think the only way Mainland Chinese filmmakers -- or Hong Kong industry ex-pats in cases like this -- can tell these types of stories (instead of yet another hundred period fantasies or shallow consumerist rom-coms) is by polishing the Party's knob to a bright silver gleam. While I'm sure one could sort of say the same thing about American filmmakers who solicit the participation of the military-industrial machine in their projects, a la Michael Bay, at least in the U.S. you can actually make movies that don't necessarily portray the government or military in a positive light and live to tell the tale.
Apparently Dante Lam is filming an expensive new movie called "The Rescue". Wouldn't be surprised if it's another "Chinese military saves Third World backwater while understanding nothing about its people" yarn that gets retitled as an "Operation" movie before release.
