Hidden Strike (2023, D: Waugh) S: Jackie Chan, John Cena
John Cena has hopped aboard the Jackie Chan express with the previously untitled action film Project X, which is being directed by Scott Waugh (Need for Speed).
The script, written by Arash Amel, follows a Chinese private security contractor who must help get oil workers out of peril when the refinery is attacked in Baghdad. Once he uncovers the attack as part of a plot to steal the oil, he partners with an American former Marine who lives in Iraq teaching orphans. The Marine had been fooled into thinking he was working to seize illegally gotten Chinese assets before he learns he was had and partners up with the Snow Leopard Commando.
Producing the project is Chan, Joe Tam, Esmond Ren and Hans Canosa.
Cena is also attached to star in Universal Pictures’ action thriller The Janson Directive, with Dwayne Johnson on as an executive producer. Cena most recently was seen in the studio’s comedy Blockers. He also voiced the bull in Ferdinand and stars in the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
He is repped by ICM Partners.

Man... Chan sure likes to be in films with similar titles of his previous work.

I'm getting a distinct WOLF WARRIOR vibe from that description. So now the Chinese are recruiting American action stars to participate in their nationalist propaganda.

Wasn’t there a comedy with the same title years back? Kinda weird having two movies with the same title that aren’t related.

There was also a Matthew Broderick film in the 80's about chimps being trained to fly jets, hence the post before yours. So 3 unrelated films with the same title.

After The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker I development a new fondness of Cena, who I thought to be a terrible actor. I watched 12 Rounds recently and now I remember why I thought he is terrible.
He couldn't act to save his life a couple years back. To call his performance wooden, would be unfair to wood. So I'm even more impressed by his development.
Jackie Chan was great in The Foreigner, but most of his movies in recent years, have been propaganda movies, but who can blame him, when his on faces life in prison or even the death penalty.

Is this part of Cena's penance for calling Taiwan a country?

Two ex-special forces soldiers (John Cena and Jackie Chan) must escort a group of civilians along Baghdad’s “Highway of Death” to the safety of the Green Zone. Hidden Strike - coming soon!!

What a terribly unoriginal title.
The visuals look…odd. Like everything looks so cartoonishly smooth and fake. It also looks like they’re trying to capitalize on Mad Max Fury Road but with all the delays it’s now 8 years too late.

This looks like something I'll have a small amount of fun watching on the couch on a Saturday afternoon - some fun with, some fun at the expense of.

Why do modern Chinese blockbusters have an almost universally terrible aesthetic? They put money into the movies, but they always just look like they were made for the Syfy channel or straight to streaming. Is it a combination of color correction, less-developed effects houses, and passing over decent cinematographers?

Yes. South Korea has way better production values almost everything they do by comparison.

They should have stuck with the original title. Unless they are hoping people think it's a direct follow up to Police Story 4: First Strike, just 27 years late.

This type of goofy action comedy should have come out 15-20 years ago when these types of Jackie Chan movies were still a draw. Kind of reminds me of Skiptrace that he did with Johnny Knoxville several years ago. A China co-production with a white co-lead. That movie made over $136M overseas and in China. But, went straight to DVD in the states.
I said it before in a different thread, but I am a big fan of The Foreigner, which I thought was a terrific action thriller. That should have been how Jackie has taken this twilight stage of his career. And that movie was actually a big box office hit. But, instead he's been cranking out these goofy and mostly bad mainland China productions or co-productions.

The truck flying upside down scene at 2:09 looks like ridiculously over the top defying the laws of physics CG from a Fast and Furious movie. But, probably from a cheaper post house.
