You can listen to old recordings of Casey Kasem counting down the top 40
This YouTube channel has Casey Kasem's countdown of the top 40 from many different weeks:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuQ...2iNBZEQ/videos
For example, here's August 21, 1982:
This webpage has a written list of the top 40 songs for each and every individual week from 1982. Other years can be accessed at the top of the page:

I was born in 1971, which, I suppose, at least partly (but not entirely, because the music really was awesome that year) explains my fondness for the music from 1982.

I can remember when "Eye of the tiger" was number 1 and I would listen every week to see if it stayed on top. It was like I was personally vested in the song. LOL

This is great. I had forgotten Shadoe Stevens would backfill for Casey sometimes.

It was the first 45 I ever bought.
I didn't start listening to the top 40 until right after it fell from #1. And then it kept falling and falling and falling, while ignorant me was hoping for it to go back up.

These shows were sent to stations on records, and I have a few of them. Disappointingly, they did NOT include any commercials on them til after 1980- I found one show from 1971 (with someone else filling in for Kasem, as he was shooting a movie) and was really bummed about that.
The rebroadcasts are "remastered", meaning all the songs are from the newest available masters, which kinda takes the fun out of it. The saving grace of the 1971 show I have (which is entirely in mono) is that the #1 song "Shaft" is a special radio version that completely omits the "Bad motha-" line, as even that was too much for some stations.

Has anyone ever heard the audio with Casey's meltdown about a dedication? It includes some NSFW language.

Wow!
That's gotta be the most appropriate and justified use of profanity that I've ever heard. He was really moved by the death of that dog, and his point about it being preceded by an uptempo song is excellent.

Never heard that in its proper context- I thought the "whether we have kids or pets or neither" was a screw-up. I knew the "up-tempo" song was Dare Me by Pointer Sisters.
I bought that Negativland CD right when it came out as I've always been a fan of them, then saw it become a collector's item (at least til it was readily listenable on the internet) after it was quickly pulled. Casey Kasem threatened to sue if it was ever put out again.

First or maybe second episode of his TV show, with songs cut due to copyright issues- one of my Betamax flea market finds:

Fond memories of taking that several hours long journey every weekend.

Thanks for the link. I too was born in 71 and while I would hear the show sometimes and watched the syndicated show I started obsessively listening week in and week out in 1983. In a "you had to be there" moment a few years ago I discovered a local station was replaying these on a Saturday morning when I had a loaner car from the dealership while mine was being repaired. The car was old and the interior and dashboard was something straight out of 1985. I turn on the radio and the first thing I heard was Casey's voice. "WTF?!?" was the first thing I said

Loved listening to these growing up. Started to listen to them on the 70s and 80s on Sirium or XM a few years ago, but they stopped airing them and did the countdowns with the DJs and VJs. Not even in the same ballpark as Casey's original version.
