Grace VanderWaal (America's Got Talent) debut album "Just The Beginning"
Opinions were mixed in the AGT thread when Grace was on the show and in the running to win two seasons ago, so whether this is of interest is up to the reader, I suppose.
To bring everyone up to speed, she's the (at the time) 12-year-old girl who performed an original song with her ukelele, and demonstrated talent that earned her a "golden buzzer" that took her straight through to the live rounds of the show. Along the way to the final she continued to perform nothing but songs she had written herself, and ended up winning the whole thing.
After the show, she released an EP titled "Perfectly Imperfect", which contained studio-recorded versions of her original songs she performed on the show, plus a couple of bonus tracks. The songs were kept simple, but were layered slightly with expanded instrumentation and vocal harmonies.
Track listing:
1. I Don't Know My Name
2. Clay
3. Light The Sky
4. Beautiful Thing
5. Gossip Girl
6. Missing You (Coffeehouse Version) (Walmart Exclusive bonus track)
7. Scars To Your Beautiful (Alessia Cara cover) (Japanese release bonus track)
8. The A Team (Ed Sheeran cover) (Japanese release bonus track)
This past November, a full studio album titled "Just The Beginning" was released, featuring 12 brand-new tracks, all written by Grace (with co-writers).
Track listing:
1. Moonlight
2. Sick of Being Told
3. Burned
4. Just a Crush
5. So Much More Than This
6. Escape My Mind
7. Talk Good
8. Florets
9. Insane Sometimes
10. A Better Life
11. City Song
12. Darkness Keeps Chasing Me
13. Lungs (Target Exclusive bonus track)
14. Hope For Change (Target Exclusive bonus track)
15. Over The Rainbow (Japanese release bonus track)
16 I Don't Know My Name (Japanese release bonus track)
I've been listening the heck out of this album. I think it's a welcome departure to the stuff we're dealt in recent years, and her talent is really quite unique and refreshing. Her co-writers and production team have created something that doesn't try to make her something she's not, and instead accentuates what she already possesses. Many hits, some misses, but all in all an entertaining listen. If this is what she creates at 13, I can't wait to hear what she sounds like in the future. I can only hope whoever she works with will work just as hard to just let her be herself, as they've done quite well here.

This past Friday, Grace released a non-album track, "Clearly", a re-imagining of Johnny Nash's 1972 hit "I Can See Clearly Now".
